The Brainwashing of a Nation in Four Basic Stages by Yuri Bezmenov

G. Edward Griffin Interview of Yuri Bezmenov, Video and Transcripts

Full interview in video below

“It takes from 15 to 20 years to demoralize a nation. Why that many years? Because this is the minimum number of years required to educate one generation of students in the country of your enemy, exposed to the ideology of the enemy. In other words, Marxist-Leninism ideology is being pumped into the soft heads of at least three generations of American students without being challenged or counter-balanced by the basic values of Americanism, American patriotism. The result? The result you can see. Most of the people who graduated in the sixties, dropouts or half-baked intellectuals are now occupying the positions of power in the government, civil service, business, mass media, educational system. You are stuck with them. You cannot get rid of them. They are contaminated. They are programmed to think and react to stimuli in a certain pattern. You cannot change their minds even if you expose them to authentic information. Even if you prove that white is white and black is black, you cannot change the basic perception and illogical behavior. In other words, in these people the process of demoralization is complete and irreversible. To rid society of these people, you need another 15 years to educate a new generation of patriotically-minded and common sense people who would be acting in favor and in the interests of the United States society.” – 1985 Interview of Yuri Bezmenov, Russian-Born, KGB-Trained Subverter Who Defected to the United States

THE FOUR STAGES OF IDEOLOGICAL SUBVERSION: WITH FORMER KGB OFFICER, YURI ALEXANDROVICH BEZMENOV INTERVIEWED BY G. EDWARD GRIFFIN

A Former KGB Officer Explains The Four Stages of Ideological Subversion:

1 - Demoralization
2 - Destabilization
3 - Crisis
4 - Normalization

VIDEO TRANSCRIPT (first aired in 1985)

G. Edward Griffin interviews Ex-KGB Soviet Defector Yuri Bezmenov on the four-step program of demoralization, destabilization, crisis, and normalization used by the KGB to subvert nations. This interview was conducted in 1985, but has only recently been re-highlighted. Yuri explains why people cannot recognize truth when presented to them and why America has difficulty resisting a Socialist agenda.

ED GRIFFIN (introduces Mr. Bezmenov):

Our conversation is with Mr. Yuri Alexandrovich Bezmenov.

Mr. Bezmenov was born in 1939 in a suburb of Moscow.  He was the son of a high-ranking Soviet army officer.

He was educated in the elite schools inside the Soviet Union and became an expert in Indian culture and Indian languages.

He had an outstanding career with Novosti [Press Agency (APN)], which was the -- and still is, I should say -- the press arm or the press agency of the Soviet Union. It turns out that this is also a front for the KGB.

He escaped to the West in 1970 after becoming totally disgusted with the Soviet system; and he did this at great risk to his life. He certainly is one of the world's outstanding experts on the subject of Soviet propaganda and disinformation and active measures.

ED GRIFFIN:

Well, you spoke before about "ideological subversion" and that's a phrase that I'm afraid some Americans don't understand. When the Soviets use the phrase "ideological subversion" what do they mean by it?

(Turning to Besmenov):

When the Soviets use the phrase "ideological subversion" what do they mean by it?

YURI ALEXANDROVICH BEZMENOV:

Ideological subversion is the process which is [a] legitimate, old word, and open. You can see it with your own eyes. All American mass media has to do is to "unplug bananas" from their ears, open up their eyes, and they can see it. There is no mystery. It has nothing to do with espionage.

I know espionage, intelligence gathering, looks more romantic. It sells more deodorants through the advertising, probably.  That's why your Hollywood producers are so crazy about James Bond type of thrillers.

But in reality, the main emphasis of the KGB is not in the area of intelligence at all.  According to my opinion, and opinion of many defectors of my caliber, only about 15% of time, money and manpower is spent on espionage as such.  The other 85% is a slow process which we call either "ideological subversion" or "active measures", активные меры in the language of the KGB, or "psychological warfare".

What it basically means is to change the perception of reality of every American to such an extent that despite the abundance of information, no one is able to come to sensible conclusions in the interests of defending themselves, their families, their community and their country.

It's a great brainwashing process which goes very slow, and is divided into four basic stages.

The first stage being "demoralization". It takes from 15 to 20 years to demoralize a nation. Why that many years? Because this is the minimum number of years required to educate one generation of students in the country of your enemy exposed to the ideology of [their] enemy.

In other words, Marxism-Leninism ideology is being pumped into the soft heads of at least three generations of American students without being challenged or counterbalanced by the basic values of  Americanism; American patriotism.

* * * * * * *

Most of the activity of that department [KGB] was to compile huge amount / volume of information on individuals who were instrumental in creating public opinion:  publishers, editors, journalists, actors, educationalists, professors of political science, members of parliament, representatives of business circles.

Most of these people were divided roughly into two groups: those who would tow the Soviet foreign policy, they would be promoted to positions of power through media and public manipulation; [and] those who refuse the Soviet influence in their own country would be character assassinated OR executed physically, come Revolution.

Same way as in a small town of Hua in South Vietnam: several thousands of Vietnamese were executed in one night when the city was captured by [the] Viet Cong for only two days. And American CIA could never figure out - how could [the communists] possibly know each individual, where he lives, where to get him; and [in order that they] would be arrested in one night basically in four hours before dawn, put on a van, driven out of the city limits, and shot.

The answer is very simple. Long before communists occupy the city, there was extensive network of informers - local Vietnamese citizens who knew absolutely everything about people who are instrumental in public opinion - including barbers and taxi drivers. Everyone who was sympathetic to United States was executed. Same thing was done under the guidance of the Soviet Embassy in Hanoi, and same thing I was doing in New Delhi. To my horror, I discovered that in the files were people who were doomed to execution. There were names of pro-Soviet Journalists with whom I was personally friendly.

ED GRIFFIN:

Pro-Soviets?

YURI BEZMENOV:

Yes!

They were idealistically minded Leftists who made several visits to U.S.S.R. and yet, the KGB decided that come Revolution, for drastic changes in political structure of India, they will have to go.

ED GRIFFIN:

Pro Soviet?

YURI BEZMENOV:

Yes, absolutely. They were idealistically minded leftist communists who had made several visits to the USSR; and yet the KGB decided, that come Revolution, or drastic changes in political structure of India - they will have to go.

ED GRIFFIN:

Why is that?

YURI BEZMENOV:

Because they know too much. Simply, because, you see the USEFUL IDIOTS; the leftists who are idealistically believing in the beauty of Soviet or Communist or Socialist or whatever system; when they get disillusioned, they become the worst enemies. That's why my KGB instructors specifically made the point, "never bother with leftists, forget about these political prostitutes - aim higher" - his was my instruction. Try to get into, uh, large circulation, established conservative media. Reach filthy rich movie makers, intellectuals in so-called academic circles. Cynical, ego-centric people who can look into your eyes with angelic expression and tell you a lie. These are the most recruitable people - people who lack moral principals, who are either too greedy or too, uh, suffer from self-importance, uh, they feel that they matter a lot. Uh, these are the people who KGB wanted very much to recruit.

ED GRIFFIN:

But to eliminate the others; to execute the others, don't they serve some purpose - wouldn't they be the one's to rely on?

YURI BEZMENOV:

No, they serve purpose only [up] to the stage of destabilization of a nation. For example, your leftists in [the] United States - all these professors and all these beautiful civil rights defenders. They are instrumental in the process of the subversion; only to destabilize a nation. When the job is completed, they are not needed anymore. They know too much.

Some of them, when they get disillusioned - when they see that Marxist-Leninist come to power - obviously they get offended; they think that THEY will come to power. That will never happen, of course; they will be lined up against the wall and shot.

But, they may turn into the most bitter enemies of Marxist-Leninists when they come to power.

And that's what happened in Nicaragua.  You remember most of these former Marxist-Leninists were either put to prison or one of them split and now he's working against Sandinistas.

It happened in Grenada when Maurice Bishop was - he was already a Marxist - he was executed by a new Marxist who was more Marxist than this Marxist.

Same happened in Afghanistan, when, uh, first there was Taraki; he was killed by Amin, then Amin was killed by Karmal with the help of KGB.

Same happened in Bangladesh when Mujibur Rahman - very pro-Soviet Leftist was assassinated by his own Marxist-Leninst military comrades.

It's the same pattern everywhere. The moment they serve their purpose, all the useful idiots are either executed entirely - all the idealistically minded Marxists - or exiled or put in prisons like in Cuba many former Marxists are in Cuba and in prison.

So, basically, America is stuck with demoralization.  And unless - even if you start right now, here, this minute, you start educating new generation of Americans - it will still take you 15 to 20 years to turn the tide of uh, ideological perception of reality, uh back to normalcy and patriotism.

* * * * * * *

YURI BEZMENOV:

The result? The result you can see.

Most of the people who graduated in the 60s, dropouts or half-baked intellectuals, are now occupying the positions of power: the government, civil service, business, mass media, educational system.

You are stuck with them.

You cannot get rid of them.  They are contaminated.  They are programmed to think and react to certain stimuli in a certain pattern [alluding to Pavlov].

You can not change their mind even if you expose them to authentic information. Even if you prove that white is white and black is black, you still can not change the basic perception and the logic of behavior.

In other words, [for] these people, the process of demoralization is complete and irreversible. To rid society of these people you need another 15 or 20 years to educate a new generation of patriotically-minded and common sense people who would be acting in favor and in the interests of United States society.

ED GRIFFIN:

And yet these people who have been programmed and as you say [are] in place and who are favorable to an opening with the Soviet concept [meaning NEW WORLD ORDER]- these are the very people who would be marked for extermination in this country?

YURI BEZMENOV:

Most of them, yes. Simply because the psychological shock, when they will see in [the] future what the beautiful society of equality and social justice means in practice. Obviously they will revolt. They will be very unhappy [and] frustrated people. And Marxist Leninist regime does not tolerate these people. Ah, they obviously they will join the [ranks] of dissenters, dissidents.

Ah, unlike in present United States, there will be no place for dissent in [a] future Marxist-Leninist America. Ah, here you can get popular, like ah, Daniel Ellsberg, or filthy rich, like Jane Fonda, for being a dissident, for criticizing your Pentagon. In [the] future these people will simply be [he makes a squishy noise] squashed like cockroaches [ for criticizing the government]. Nobody is going to pay them nothing for their beautiful, noble ideas of equality. This they don't understand. And, and ah, will be greatest shock for them, of course.

* * * * * * *

YURI BEZMENOV:

1. The demoralization process in the United States is basically completed already, for the last 25 years, actually; it's over-fulfilled because, ah, demoralization reaches such areas where previously not even Comrade Andropov [1911-1984] and all his experts would even dream of such tremendous success.

Most of it is done by Americans to Americans, thanks to lack of moral standards. As I mentioned before, ah, exposure to true information does not matter any more. A person who is demoralized is unable to assess true information. The facts tell nothing to him. Ah, even if I shower him with information, with authentic proof, with documents, with pictures. Even if I take him by force to the Soviet Union and show him the concentration camps...he will refuse to believe it.... until he is going to receive a kick in his fat bottom. When the military boot crashes, then he will understand. But not before that. That's the tragedy of the situation of demoralization.

2.  The next stage is destabilization.

This time, subverter does not care about your ideas and the patterns of your consumption. Whether you eat junk food and get fat and flabby doesn't matter any more. It only takes 2 to 5 years to destabilize a nation. This time what matters is essentials: economy, foreign relations, [and] defense systems. And you can see it quite clearly that in some... sensitive areas such as defense and [the] economy, the influence of Marxist-Leninist ideas in the United States is absolutely fantastic. I could never believe it 14 years ago when I landed in this part of the world that the process will go that fast.

3.  The next stage, of course is crisis.

It may take only up to six weeks to bring a country to the verge of crisis. You can see it in Central America, now.

4.  And, after crisis, with a violent change of power structure and economy, you have so-called a period of "normalization".  It may last indefinitely.

Normalization is a cynical expression borrowed from Soviet propaganda.  When the Soviet tanks moved into Czechoslovakia in 1968, Comrade Breznev said:  "Now, the situation in brotherly Czechoslovakia is normalized."

This is what will happen in [the] United States if you allow all the schmucks to bring the country to crisis. To promise people all kinds of goodies, and the paradise on Earth. Uh, to destabilize your economy, to eliminate the principal of free market competition, and to put a big brother government in Washington D.C. with benevolent dictators like [1984] Walter Mondale, who will promise lots of things - never mind whether the promises are fulfilled or not.

He [the dictator] will go to Moscow to kiss the bottoms of a new generation of Soviet assassins. Never mind.  He will create false illusions that the situation is under control.  The situation is NOT under control. [The] situation is disgustingly out of control.

Most of the American politicians, media and educational system trains another generation of people who think that they are living at the peace time.  False.

United States is in a state of war: undeclared total war against the basic principles and the foundations of this system.

And the initiator of this war is not Comrade Andropov of course - it's the system. However, ridiculous it may sound, [it is] the world Communist system or the world Communist conspiracy. Whether I scare some people or not, I don't give a hoot. If you're not scared by now, nothing can scare you.

You don't have to be paranoid about it. What actually happens now, that unlike myself, you have literally several years to live on unless United States wake up. The time bomb is ticking. With every second, the disaster is coming closer. Unlike myself, you will have nowhere to defect to, unless you want to live in Antarctica with penguins.

ED GRIFFIN:

Okay, so what do we do?  What is your recommendation to the American people?

YURI BEZMENOV:

Well, the immediate thing that comes to mind is, of course, there must be a very strong national effort to educate people in the spirit of REAL patriotism, number one. Number two, to explain [to] them the real danger of socialist, communist, welfare state, Big Brother government. If people fail to grasp the impending danger [of that development], nothing ever will help the United States. You may kiss goodbye your freedoms, including [freedom to] homosexuals, to the prison inmate. All this freedom will vanish in five seconds, including your precious lives.

The moment [that] at least part of [the] United States population is convinced that the danger is real, they have to FORCE their government - and I'm not talking about sending letters, signing petitions, and all this beautiful, noble activity - I'm talking about FORCING [the] United States government to stop aiding Communism....

In summary, the Active Measures to subvert the West are:
  • Demoralization
  • Destabilization
  • Crisis
  • Normalization
Think about many of the issues we face today. This KGB developed 4 part process has been applied to just about every institution and organization in this country to effect the enormous cultural changes in the last half century. It is at the heart of every action taken by the feminist movement in their efforts to lobby for what we now recognize as the active effort to break the Patriarchal nuclear family as the foundation for our society. The institution of marriage and basic gender roles have been demoralized, destabilized and in a state of crisis for an entire generation now…to the point to where it is now normalized.

As Yuri said, one only has to open their eyes to easily see that we have most assuredly been subverted.

The Overwhelming Majority of K-12 Teachers in Public Schools are Highly Politicized and are Solidly in the Liberal Camp Ideologically

THE DAILY SHEEPLE - Betsy DeVos was confirmed as the United States education secretary. The aversion teachers unions have to DeVos is on display. Randi Weingarten, the president of the American Federation of Teachers, went as far as to say that the day DeVos was confirmed was a “sad day for children.”  But the AFT isn’t an innocent party in the politics game. It invested heavily in Democratic politicians like former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.

In the 2016 election cycle alone, the AFT spent over $19 million in Washington, and Hillary Clinton was their top recipient.

The former Democratic presidential nominee, the ATF wrote at the time, “shares our vision for America,” which includes blind support for teacher tenure — a policy that forces schools to keep bad teachers in classrooms and that DeVos vocally opposed long before Trump picked her as his education secretary. So it isn’t a surprise that organizations like the ATF would be so adamantly opposed to her nomination.

But despite the rhetoric, the Department of Education was created as a promise to teachers unions, meant to “fix” the problems created by state governments running public education at the time.

The agency was never supposed to exist, as even Democrats disliked the idea at the time. As Reason Magazine’s Anthony L. Fisher explains, then-President Jimmy Carter created the department in 1979 as “a favor to a large and powerful special interest group,” and not “a necessary reorganization to allow the federal government to ‘meet its responsibilities in education more effectively, more efficiently, and more responsively,’ as then-President Jimmy Carter put it.”

DeVos may have undeniable ties to the Republican party, but her policies scare union leaders because they would allow for institutions to use public funds to run schools where staff members aren’t required to be unionized — not because either party is willing to put an end to the federal government’s control of public education.

Despite the fuss, DeVos isn’t the witch opposition leaders claim she is. But Democratic leaders aren’t the supporters of equality in education they claim to be either. The truth is that freeing education from the hands of bureaucrats would be the only answer to this problem, rendering both sides useless when it comes to setting an agenda.

Department of Education: Doing More Harm Than Good

The department was first created as a bureaucratic “fix” to state-run education, allowing the federal government to intervene in the educational affairs of individual states across the country. But instead of accomplishing what it set out to achieve, the department has, instead, used copious amounts of public funds to create and maintain bureaucracies that create and enforce regulations, including rules that hurt minorities who choose to attend for-profit “career” colleges or career schools — institutions that cater to the low-income population.

After all, if the federal government is going to offer student loans to the poor, why should it discriminate against those who opt for a technical school? Does Washington have something against offering low-income students an opportunity to have hands-on experience related to their career interests? Or perhaps they aren’t too fond of welders?

On average, the country spends over 23 percent of per capita income on its students, and yet it is clear that spending so much taxpayer money on education over the years has resulted in little to no improvement in quality.

In 2015, America ranked 17th in educational performance out of forty countries. It ranked 2nd in general ignorance regarding voting patterns, social statistics, and other subjects.

When it comes to overall performance, private schools still beat public schools. This is a fact politicians all know about since most public school supporters opposing DeVos have children or grandchildren enrolled in private institutions.

So why are we still debating who should head the Department of Education as opposed to how soon we could put an end to it?

Educating or Indoctrinating? Facts are Stubborn Things

Over the 30 years of its existence, the Department of Education has exerted a great deal of influence on K-12 education, mostly because public schools are only able to receive federal funding if they “follow certain federal guidelines.”

Teachers applying these standards are also the product of this influence, having been in the public education system before running off to college themselves.

In an article for the Mises Institute, professor of communication at the University of South Florida Loyd S. Pettegrew writes that the overwhelming majority of K-12 teachers working today in the public school system are highly politicized, with K-12 English classes becoming “ersatz social studies classes with biased content taught by moralizing pedagogues.”

He quotes David Labaree, professor in Stanford’s Graduate School of Education, who claims that “education schools are solidly in the progressive camp ideologically.”

But now that the Department of Education will be run by partisans of different political ideologies, is it fair to contend that education standards may shift, allowing for different political ideas to take over?

When progressivism became a powerful force in America, the U.S. government became a powerful interventionist machine — domestically and abroad. The central tenet of progressivism, historian and author Thaddeus Russell writes, is that “the American national government is responsible for the reform and uplift of those ‘we’ deem to be living below ‘our’ standards, and that ‘they’ must be protected from their oppressors.” President Carter was a proud progressive who claimed he had seen the “lives and the hopes of people enriched beyond all expectations by actions of the Federal Government” during the inauguration of the then-newly minted Department of Health and Human Services.

He believed that the federal government has a role in ‘changing people’s lives’ as it sees fit, thus the creation of a federal bureaucracy tasked with the goal of overseeing the education of all American children.

As with anything else in government, these agencies aren’t nonpartisan institutions. They are run by people — people with agendas and political preferences.

Unless we’re willing to succumb to the standards defended by current and future administrations, having and supporting a federal education department should not be a priority. Abolishing it would still not be enough since education departments run by state governments would remain in place. After all, public schools in America have, for the past decades, worked to make students comfortable with the idea of living in a “Big Brother police state control grid.” This is just the type of “schooling” the youth requires to stay obedient throughout their adulthood, never questioning the government’s official narrative.

Instead of giving in to conformity, what we must remember is that unless parents are willing to surrender their children’s education entirely to what the government deems appropriate, choice is what should guide personal education policy. And more choices are only possible when there’s freedom to experiment. Having a powerful education department in Washington D.C. overseeing every single aspect of every child’s education is the very opposite of freedom.

New Science Standards Forcing State Schools to Teach Human-induced Climate Change

West Virginia Votes To Block Science Standards Because They Teach Global Warming

Think Progress - Beginning this summer, public school students in West Virginia were supposed to learn about human-induced climate change three times — in sixth-grade science, in ninth-grade science, and in a high school elective course on environmental science. Now, it’s unclear whether students will learn about climate change at all.

That’s because the West Virginia House of Delegates voted last Friday to block new science standards from being implemented for at least another year, due to the fact that they mention climate change as a man-made problem. Proponents of the delay, which was introduced as an amendment to a larger education bill, argued that the new curriculum would have presented the science of climate change without properly reflecting both sides of the global warming debate.
“In an energy-producing state, it’s a concern to me that we are teaching our kids potentially that we are doing immoral things here in order to make a living in our state,” Delegate Jim Butler, (R) told the Charleston Gazette-Mail. “We need to make sure our science standards are actually teaching science and not pushing a political agenda.” Butler also worried that the new curriculum would “expect students to believe” in global warming and “prove it with evidence.”
Also speaking to the Charleston Gazette-Mail, Delegate Michel Moffatt (R), who introduced the amendment, worried that students would “twist” the climate science curriculum to conclude that “all fossil fuels are bad.” And Delegate Frank Deem (R) speaking in support of the amendment, said that “there’s nothing that upsets [him] more than the idea that it’s a proven fact that climate change is man made.”

Adopted in 2015, the new science curriculum, which was based on the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), has long been a divisive issue for the second-largest coal producing state in the country. In early 2015, the West Virginia Board of Education approved new education standards based on the NGSS, but included changes to the cirriculum that gave added weight to the idea that there is a debate surrounding climate science. That move produced a swift outcry from proponents of science and climate education, and led the West Virginia Board of Education to reverse its changes and return to the original NGSS version.

Those standards were officially adopted by the board in April, but included a few changes meant to appease climate change doubters, like mentioning “natural forces” in a list of things that could be driving climate change. The standards were supposed to go into effect beginning July 1.

Proponents of the NGSS argue that climate change, when taught, is often left out of general curricula, relegated instead to specific classes that aren’t required of all students. And around the United States, the way that climate change is taught in schools varies widely. A recent survey published in Science found that while three out of four teachers spend at least an hour on climate change instruction, two-thirds of instructors fail to teach the clear connection between human activities and climate change.

The National Center for Science Education (NCSE), which promotes the teaching of both climate science and evolution in school curricula, denounced Friday’s vote.
“West Virginia’s children, like children everywhere, need to learn about the science of climate change,” NCSE’s executive director Ann Reid said in a statement, “since it is they who will have to live in a world that we have been warming. For their sake, West Virginia’s Senate needs to reject the proposed repeal of the state science standards.”
The bill now goes to the Republican-led West Virginia Senate. Republican Senator Dave Sypolt, who is chair of the Senate Education Committee, told ABC News that he has no problem with the bill as it is currently written.
“As it stands right now, I have no problems with it at all,” Sypolt said. “I’m going to work it and send it right through.”

Carbon Dioxide is Generally Regarded as a Safe and Non-toxic, Inert Gas

While convenient to use the term 'carbon emissions', it's not accurate to conflate it with 'CO2', carbon dioxide. CO2 is a vaporous (invisible) gas, NOT soot or dust or grit -- in other words, not an air pollutant. The Supreme Court, under the Clean Air Act, made a huge mistake in allowing the EPA to control it, and it needs to be reversed. The enormous hoax, promulgated by the anti-capitalist, that we can manage climate by keeping fossil fuels 'in the ground' is so heavily entrenched in the dogma of our public schools that the little skulls of 'mush' are already seriously tainted.  It'll take generations to straighten this mess out.

The term ‘carbon pollution’ is unscientific and misleading

February 20, 2014

JustFactsDaily - “Language is power,” and “with careful selection of and modification to language,” wrote Evie Loveband in the journal Idiom, any one person “has the power to control the debate and rewrite history.” This truism spurs endless debates over terminology in the political arena: Are we talking about an “unborn child” or a “fetus”? Is he “gay” or “homosexual”? Are we eating “lean finely textured beef” or “pink slime”? Should we “give amnesty to illegal immigrants” or “legalize undocumented workers”?

Ultimately, many language choices are subjective, but some cross the line from preference to deceitfulness. In his essay “Politics and the English Language,” George Orwell wrote about people who use words “in a consciously dishonest way. That is, the person who uses them has his own private definition, but allows his hearer to think he means something quite different.”

Such is the case with purveyors of the term “carbon pollution,” a phrase that conflates carbon dioxide with noxious chemicals like carbon monoxide and black carbon. Carbon dioxide or CO2 is the primary man-made greenhouse gas, but it is also a natural substance that is essential for life. Additionally, it is colorless, odorless, and nontoxic at many times the concentration in earth’s atmosphere. In fact, nature produces considerably more CO2 than man.

Thus, for reasons detailed below, referring to CO2 as “carbon pollution” is highly misleading.

First, the phrase “carbon pollution” is scientifically inaccurate because there are more than ten million different carbon compounds, and the word “carbon” could refer to any of them. Some of the more notorious of these compounds are highly poisonous, such as carbon monoxide (a deadly gas) and black carbon (the primary ingredient of cancerous and mutagenic soot). Using a phrase that does not distinguish between such drastically different substances is a sure way to misinform people.

Second, the term “pollution” conjures up images of smoke pouring from smokestacks and sewage flowing into rivers, which are markedly different from CO2 emissions. Those who use the word “pollution” for CO2 draw no distinction between these scenarios, which again encourages a false impression.

Some of the more prominent users of this verbiage go even further to foster the idea of CO2 as a toxic contaminant. For example, while referring to CO2 as “carbon pollution,” President Obama criticizes “polluters” who “emit the dangerous carbon emissions that contaminate the water we drink and pollute the air that we breathe.” In stark contrast, the academic book Carbon Dioxide Capture for Storage in Deep Geologic Formations explains that:
Carbon dioxide is generally regarded as a safe and non-toxic, inert gas. It is an essential part of the fundamental biological processes of all living things. It does not cause cancer, affect development or suppress the immune system in humans.
Fueling the deceitful impression advanced by Obama and others, major media outlets, such as Politico, NBC News, and the New York Times, publish articles and commentaries that refer to CO2 as “carbon pollution” with pictures of billowing smokestacks, such as these:

The fact is that none of the smoke in these pictures is CO2, because CO2 is invisible except under extreme pressures and temperatures that cause it to transition from a gas to a liquid or solid. Such conditions are far outside the range of anything found in smokestacks.

Some argue that it is acceptable to call CO2 a pollutant because of the Supreme Court’s 5-4 ruling that allowed the EPA to regulate CO2 under the Clean Air Act’s expansive definition of pollution. Such rationale, however, is not a license to use these words in ways that create misleading impressions.

Furthermore, why would anyone who honestly wants to inform people employ an ambiguous and unscientific phrase like “carbon pollution” in favor of a clear and scientifically accurate term like “greenhouse gas”? Only those who simply echo what they hear or those wantonly pushing global warming-related taxes, regulations or similar polices would use such verbiage.

In sum, those who refer to carbon dioxide as “pollution” blur a critical distinction between noxious pollutants and greenhouse gases. Moreover, media outlets that consciously engage in this practice blur a critical distinction between journalism and activism.

America Under Communism: Is This Tomorrow?

File:Is this tomorrow.jpg

Today, there are approximately 85,000 official members of the Communist Party in the United States. There are hundreds of additional members whose names are not carried on the Party roles, because acting as disciplined fifth columnists of the Kremlin, they have wormed their way into key positions in government offices and other positions of public trust. Communists themselves claim that for every official Party member, there are ten others ready, willing and able to do the Party’s bidding. These people are working day and night—laying the groundwork to overthrow YOUR GOVERNMENT!

Is This Tomorrow: America Under Communism

CONELRAD Adjacent - As David Hadju points out in his brilliant book The Ten-Cent Plague, the comic book was a huge mass-market medium to be reckoned with in the 1940s and early 1950s. In its heyday, the format reached more kids than television, radio or books.

Father Louis Gales was one of the people who recognized that the comic book format could be employed for storylines other than superheroes, crime and science fiction. Indeed, the no-nonsense priest understood that comic book art combined with a strong message could result in highly effective patriotic and religious propaganda.

In 1942 he founded the Catechetical Guild Educational Society based in St. Paul, Minnesota and five years later his firm published a classic Cold War comic book.

LO-ITT-CapitolSteps
Is This Tomorrow: America Under Communism, a 48-page Soviet America cautionary tale, presents a wonderfully over-the-top speculative narrative of just how easy it would be for the Communists to take over the United States.

It starts, naturally, with a cabal of American Communists in New York City led by a man named “Jones.” Jones sports a Vandyke beard, so you know he’s pure evil (we later learn that he is also quite Cheney-esque).

The comic book opens with a textual hammer to the head (that most kids probably skipped to get to the arresting image of Americans fighting Soviet goons on the steps of the U.S. Capitol):
TO MAKE YOU THINK!
"Is This Tomorrow: America Under Communism is published for one purpose—TO MAKE YOU THINK! To make you more alert to the menace of Communism.

Today, there are approximately 85,000 official members of the Communist Party in the United States. There are hundreds of additional members whose names are not carried on the Party roles, because acting as disciplined fifth columnists of the Kremlin, they have wormed their way into key positions in government offices, and other positions of public trust. Communists themselves claim that for every official Party member, there are ten others ready, willing and able to do the Party’s bidding. These people are working day and night—laying the groundwork to overthrow YOUR GOVERNMENT!

The average American is prone to say, “It can’t happen here.” Millions of people in other countries used to say the same thing. Today, they are dead—or living in Communist slavery. IT MUST NOT HAPPEN HERE!
lo-Sent-ITT-PuppetStrings
Jones and his propaganda adviser “Brown” explain their manipulation of the American media as a precursor to their Moscow-approved take-over of the U.S.:
“We’ve been training writers and editors for years to follow the Party line. They will be ready to take complete control of radio and publishing once we get in.”

“Class conflict and the breakdown of bourgeois morals have been handled very well by our people in Hollywood.”
(Note: This panel depicts patrons filing into a theater showing a salacious film entitled “The Other Wife.” A post-take-over panel, later in the comic book, shows patrons outside a theater showing “Russia Today.”).

Jones and Party operatives have also manipulated strike leaders and have stoked racial and religious hatred to ease the skids for America’s conquering. And since this is a comic book published by Catholics and distributed to parochial schools, guess which religion gets the lion’s share of the Communist’s abuse? If you guessed Catholicism, you would be correct. The not-so-subtle subtext for the youthful Catholic reader here seems to be: pay attention to this story or the nun with the ruler will be the least of your worries…

lo-Sent-ITT-FinishOffCatholics
Playing off of the paranoid Communist-infiltration-of-government canard, the writers of Is This Tomorrow have Jones hold sway over the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Ted Cline. This relationship comes in handy when the President and Vice-President (riding in an uncovered limo) are assassinated by hand grenade by a killer who looks remarkably like R. Crumb.

Helpful expository panels explain what happens next in the newly elevated President’s post-9/11-like expansion of Executive Branch powers:
“The only solution is to declare an unlimited emergency, and give me extraordinary powers!”

“A confused Congress readily accepts Ted Cline’s offer to solve the nation’s problems.”
Behind the scenes, of course, it is the Cheney-like Jones who calls the shots and informs the dupe President:
“I’m taking things over from here!”
Jones is named “Chief Advisor” and becomes the de facto Chief Executive.

lo-Sent-ITT-Excuse-Power
Jones proceeds to rule by fiat with Communist henchmen as his enforcers. He has the Joint Chiefs of Staff machine gunned to death (“Get rid of those bodies tonight Comrades”).
He informs a stirring Congress that “there will be no investigation; there is no time to waste on such foolishness.”
To back up his casual dismissal of the congressional body’s power of oversight, he brings armed guards to the floor of the House of Representatives.

If that wasn’t enough illustration of Jones’s incredible power over Democracy, there are many more examples offered in the comic book:

Food supply is manipulated by the State in order to gain control over the citizenry. Suburban food riots with women clutching carrots ensue.
lo-Sent-ITT-SuburbanFoodRiot
When a minister questions the actions of the government, his church is blown up and the minister is executed by Commie goons.

Critical newspapers are denied newsprint paper until they tow the Party line.

lo-Sent-ITT-CommunistElection
The telephone system and radio networks are nationalized.

lo-Sent-ITT-BellTelephone
Communist teachers take over at elementary schools and universities and teach the long betrayed truth of the Party!

lo-Sent-ITT-College
Banks are liquidated.

Gun rights for the masses are revoked and capital punishment is meted out to violators.

Catholic monks are forced to work for the Party. In one memorable panel, a Communist guard is asked by a monk what his order is supposed to do now that the government has revoked freedom of religion. The swift and unforgiving response is:
“Take off those petticoats and work for the State!”
lo-Sent-ITT-Catholic-Petticoats
American citizens are shipped off to camps in North Dakota and Alaska as punishment.

lo-Sent-ITT-ConcentrationCamps
Elections are held, but the Communists are the only Party on the ballot. Opposition is dealt with brutally.

Book burnings take place with the ubiquitous Jones tossing the Bible into the flames with particular enthusiasm.

LO-Sent-ITT-BibleBurning
Of course, no Soviet America story would be complete without what the comic book describes as “The Crowning Achievement” of the Communist take-over: A brainwashed blonde boy informing on his parents:
“My dad’s got a short-wave radio…And besides that my mom still has some religious junk.”

“We’ll fix that,” the Soviet officer responds.
lo-Sent-ITT-Crowning Achievement
Is This Tomorrow concludes with the dictator Jones dying at a victory celebration as one of his henchmen vows to assume power.

If this Communism-in-perpetuity lesson isn’t explicit enough, there is a textual postscript that, like the preamble to the comic book, most kids probably ignored:
INCREDIBLE?
Did our story seem incredible? It is unbelievable—that such a small group could ever dream of enforcing its will upon the majority. But remember that a group for smaller than the number of Communists living and working in America today seized control of Russia in 1917.
No one can refuse to believe what he knows to be true. And we do know that every method shown in this presentation has been used by the Communists in their rise to power in other countries.
Starvation, murder, slavery, force—those are the tools the Communists use to carry out the doctrine of Communism.
The Communists are preparing to seize control of America in any crisis.
This crisis, real or contrived—will be there signal to move in… and make their bid for power.
This crisis might begin with a flood in Pennsylvania—a drought in the Middle West. Or it might begin with a general strike in some of our large industrial cities—New York—Detroit—Chicago—San Francisco.
It happened in Poland, Hungary, Yugoslavia, and country after country, the world over.
WHERE DO YOU COME IN?

You are the one with whom the Communist is struggling right now. His aim is to make you hate your fellow man and keep you blind to the important things in life. He wants to make you forget the importance of your right to vote as you please—to say what you please—to go where you please—to worship as you please. The Communist really wants you to forget all your rights to individual freedom and liberty.
But you cannot assume your individual rights without assuming individual responsibility.
If you want to keep on living, you must know who the Communists are—and their methods of working. You must recognize the Communist Party line in action and separate Communist propaganda from the factual news of the day.
You are on the defensive in this battle. You owe it to yourself to know all about the invader. He knows more about you than you suspect.
