Meetup Networking Site Partners with Clinton-affiliated Labor Group to Coordinate Anti-Trump Protests for 120,000 Activists

March 20, 2017

(AP) — Meetup is taking a leap into the Trump resistance.

The New York-based networking site will unveil plans in the coming days to partner with a labor group — under the guidance of a former Hillary Clinton aide — to coordinate protests among more than 120,000 activists already involved with anti-Trump Meetup groups.

It's a risky move for a tech company that has helped millions come together to share interests of all kinds, from hiking to languages to President Donald Trump himself. But it reflects an increasing willingness of some major technology firms to push back against the Republican president.

Meetup CEO Scott Heiferman told The Associated Press that the new arrangement, to be known only as #Resist, gives the loosely organized protest movement the infrastructure needed to execute large responses to the new president's policies.

"It's one thing for a CEO to say, 'I'm going to stand up against a politician,'" Heiferman said. "It's even further for the company itself to mobilize people."

For Heiferman and other tech leaders, Trump's push to block immigration from several Muslim-majority countries marked a tipping point.

"When a certain line is crossed," he said, "we have a civic duty not to be quiet."

The White House did not respond to a request Friday for comment about Meetup's plans.

About 40 technology companies met privately this month in New York City to brainstorm ways to push back against Trump policies on immigration, transgender protections, women's health and arts funding, as well as more traditional technology issues like net neutrality and encryption.

The meeting was designed to "get beyond handwringing and move toward real action," said Michal Rosenn, general counsel for the Brooklyn-based company Kickstarter.

Kickstarter and Meetup were also among 58 technology companies that signed a friend-of-the-court brief on Tuesday charging that the White House's revised immigration plan would harm their employees and customers.

Airbnb, Apple, Twitter and Yelp filed a court brief late last month to protest the Trump administration's decision to rescind guidance that instructed schools to allow transgender students to use bathrooms that match their gender identity.

The car service Lyft recently pledged $1 million to the American Civil Liberties Union.

Meetup, which employs 175 people and claims 30 million users worldwide, has gone further than most.

Disturbed by Trump's initial push for a travel ban, the firm held a company-wide "resist-a-thon" last month and unveiled more than 1,000 new "#resist" Meetup groups that didn't have to pay the standard $15 monthly fee to advertise their events on the site. Currently, there are more than 1,000 Meetup groups devoted to the Trump resistance across the country.

Meetup hired Clinton's former digital organizing director, Jess Morales Rocketto, to coordinate the new organizing platform with a group allied with the National Domestic Workers Alliance.

Obama is Scheming to Sabotage Trump’s Presidency and is Bankrolling a Nonstop Protest Against Invented Outrage

How Obama is bankrolling a nonstop protest against invented outrage

November 14, 2015

NEW YORK POST - Barack Obama’s presidency has been pockmarked by rioting, looting and protests. That’s no coincidence. It’s what the former community organizer sought from Day One. And it’s just going to get worse before he leaves office.

The senseless protests we’re seeing break out on the campuses of the University of Missouri, Yale and other colleges, as well as on bridges and highway overpasses and outside police stations, are precisely the kind of thing Obama was trained to organize while attending leftist agitation schools founded by Chicago communist Saul Alinsky. He learned to a fare-thee-well how to “rub raw the sores of discontent.”

Now Obama is returning the favor of his Alinsky masters, training and cloning an army of social justice bullies to carry on his revolution to “fundamentally transform America.” He’s doing it mainly through a little-known but well-funded group called Organizing for Action, or OFA, which will outlast his administration.

OFA, formerly Obama for America, has trained more than 10,000 leftist organizers, who, in turn, are training more than 2 million youths in Alinsky street tactics.

The leftist group, which recently registered as a 501c4 nonprofit eligible for unlimited contributions, holds regular “organizing summits” on college campuses.

Through social media, they mobilize flash mobs against “biased cops,” “climate-change deniers,” “Wall Street predators” and “gun extremists.” They hold rallies against conservative foes of gay marriage, LGBT rights, abortion and amnesty for illegal immigrants.

In addition, Obama has trained hundreds of thousands of junior agitators through AmeriCorps, a Clinton youth program he’s dramatically expanded, and through My Brother’s Keeper, the “racial justice” initiative he launched in the wake of the 2012 death of Florida teen Trayvon Martin. My Brother’s Keeper agitates for “school discipline reform” — that is, touchy-feely alternatives to suspensions and expulsions — and other measures to “improve outcomes for boys and young men of color.”

All three of these federally sponsored projects have crossover with the Black Lives Matter and Occupy Wall Street movements, both of which Obama embraces. They share manpower and resources, as well as radical agendas, while coordinating activities with nonprofit ACORN clones, who are being secretly bankrolled through Justice Department subprime settlement funds extracted from banks.

In fact, the president has egged on both BLM and OWS protesters. “We are on their side,” he assured OWS in 2011. And last year, Obama met with Black Lives Matter co-founder Patrisse Cullors, who earlier this year also got to sit down with the first lady in the White House.

This president has encouraged the nonstop civil unrest exhausting the nation.

The protests of the ’60s had real causes — fighting for civil rights and opposing the draft during an unpopular war. But today’s protesters are posers grasping at faux causes and ginning up pseudo-grievances about things like Halloween costumes and swastikas drawn in bathrooms.

They are protesters in search of an issue, agitators in search of a target. They aren’t even rabble-rousers so much as rubble-rousers picking through the charred remains of the last revolution.

Alinsky’s 13th rule for radicals — “Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it and polarize it” — is getting harder to do, because there are fewer and fewer real targets from which to pick. That’s why today’s racism charges are so nebulous.

‘About Time for an Assassination’: Trump Death Threats Swamp Twitter

Twitchy.com
November 11, 2016
Despicable degenerates are continuing with death threats aimed at President-elect Donald Trump. It only got worse after the election and the twisted cretins are flooding social media with calls for the assassination of Donald Trump.
Oh, and for Vice President-elect Mike Pense as well. One of the worst? A journalist at The Telegraph:
No words. THAT is the media, folks. She wasn’t alone either:

Saul Alinsky Would Be Proud of the Radicals in Large U.S. Cities: University Administrators and Professors and High School Teachers Postponed Tests and Organized Civil Disobedience; Protestors Set Fires, Obstructed Traffic, and Burned U.S. Flags and an Effigy of Trump (Imagine the Mayhem That Would Have Ensued Had Someone Burned an Effigy of Obama in 2008 or 2012)

November 10, 2016

USA TODAY - Protesters took to the streets Wednesday in at least 10 cities to march against president-elect Donald Trump - and numerous college students and faculty leaders took to social media to announce support groups and even postponed exams.

Protests were underway in Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Boston, Washington, D.C., Portland, Ore., St. Paul, Minn. and several other cities. An estimated 2,000 protesters shouted angrily in downtown Seattle, expressing their frustration at the Trump victory over Democrat and former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, who won 228 electoral votes to Trump's 279.

Police in riot gear struggled to hold back scores of protesters in some of the cities as protesters chanted "Not My President" and "No Racist USA." The protests were mostly peaceful. Seattle police said they were investigating a report of a shooting near the site of the protest in that city, but it may not have involved protesters.

In Los Angeles, protesters poured into the streets near City Hall and torched a giant Trump effigy, the Los Angeles Times reported. Later in the night, hundreds marched onto the busy 101 Freeway which brought the highway to a complete standstill. The California Highway Patrol and the Los Angeles Police Department —who urged protesters to remain lawful and peaceful — responded and were seen leading demonstrators away from the busy highway.  At least 13 people were later arrested, LAPD Officer Tony Im told the Los Angeles Times.

In Washington, D.C., hundreds took to the streets carrying signs saying “Nasty Women Fight Back” and “White Males for Equality for All.”

The unrest culminated when two separate anti-Trump demonstrations converged in front of the Trump International Hotel. They chanted and yelled "Impeach Donald Trump” and toward the end yelled at police officers who stood guard at the hotel entrance.
In New York, thousands of demonstrators blocked off streets around Trump Tower near the busy intersection of 57th Street and Fifth Avenue, chanting "hey hey, ho ho, Donald Trump has got to go" and "p---y grabs back," a reference to taped conversations of Trump making lewd commentary about women. One woman protester was topless while another climbed on top of a tree to see the activity. Taxis, city buses and passenger vehicles stood at a standstill.

"We're (mad) so we're out here in the streets," said demonstrator Omar Aqeel, a 27-year-old film producer who lives in Brooklyn.

While he and other demonstrators said they were aware that protests could not reverse the election, they said they still felt it would have an effect on the future.

"I hope it rallies everyone together as a wake up call," Aqeel said.

"I think there's a chance for impeachment at the end of the day," said protester Joey Henriquez, a 22-year-old student at the City College of New York, who lives in Manhattan. "We can't let him have eight years."

In Boston, thousands of anti-Donald Trump protesters streamed through downtown, chanting "Trump's a racist" and carrying signs that said "Impeach Trump" and "Abolish Electoral College."
In Chicago, several hundreds of protesters gathered near the Trump International Hotel and Tower to express their displeasure with the president-elect.

The protesters held signs with messages such as "Love Trumps Hate," "Not My President " and expletive-laden repudiations.

Chloe Stratton, 33, a transgendered woman who moved to Chicago earlier this year, said she fears for what a Trump-Pence White House holds for the nation's LGBT community.

Pence has opposed same-sex marriage and expressed support for shock therapy for people with same-sex attractions.

"I am terrified for my life," said Stratton, who added that she has begun exploring options to move away from the U.S.

Police said five people were arrested in Chicago over the course of the protest on minor charges—two for obstructing traffic, one for criminal trespass, one for reckless conduct, and one for criminal trespass and resisting arrest.
Just last week, the Democrat-controlled Chicago's city council voted to remove honorary signage near Trump's building, a rebuke for the president-elect's blistering criticism of crime in the city while he was on the stump.

On Wednesday, Mayor Rahm Emanuel insisted he did not fear that Trump would exact any payback on the city over the move.

"I'm not worried about Donald Trump trying to somehow penalize Chicago, " said Emanuel, who served as President Obama's first White House chief of staff.

Earlier Wednesday, protesters at American University burned U.S. flags on campus.

In Oregon, dozens of people blocked traffic in downtown Portland, burned American flags and forced a delay for trains on two light-rail lines. Trump supporters taunted the demonstrators with signs.  At one point, a lone Trump supporter was chased across Pioneer Courthouse Square and hit in the back with a skateboard before others intervened.
An estimated 6,000 protesters gathered Wednesday night in Oakland, Calif. Videos on social media captured fires erupting as the protests rolled on.

Across the country, universities and even a few high schools organized post-election civil disobedience of a different sort. Some teachers sent notes to students postponing tests and offering support. Student unions offered sessions of meditation, discussions and tea.

"The nation in which you currently reside decided last night to elect a president whose own words have painted him a moral and possibly physical hazard to many of us," University of Maryland professor Alan Peel wrote to students, postponing all assessments. "I debated whether to press on today in the spirit of re-establishing normalcy, but have come to realize that my position and my background may have afforded me the privilege to do so. Others may find they do not have that privilege."

"Partisan, inflammatory statements unfortunately seem to be part of modern campaign rhetoric, but they cause real wounds," Northwestern University wrote in an email to students Wednesday, reminding them to notify professors if they need to miss class. The email directed students to the campus Multicultural Center, the Gender & Sexuality Resource Center and The Black House, a gathering place for the university's black community. Throughout the day the campus hosted a “What’s Your Reaction” event for students to express themselves by drawing pictures. They even provided the paper, markers and snacks.
The University of California, Berkeley created safe spaces for minority students, and for those who might be illegal immigrants. There are also special "healing spaces" for women and those who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender.

"Be gentle with yourselves and take care of each other," according to an email sent to Berkeley students from four of the university's vice chancellors and others. "We know that the results of yesterday's election have sparked fear and concern among many in our community; in particular our immigrant and undocumented communities, Muslim, African American, Chicanx/Latinx, LGBTQ+, Asian and Pacific Islander communities, survivors of sexual assault, people with disabilities, women, and many others."

At the University of Vermont, administrators voiced a similar sentiment. "This is a challenging time for many of our colleagues and students, who may be feeling isolated and concerned for personal welfare," UVM president Tom Sullivan wrote in an email to the university community, offering time for tea and reflections, meditations and structured discussion.

The Boston Latin School, a high school in Boston, offered a support team of guidance counselors, clinicians, and nurses after school Wednesday and before school Thursday for students who need support, according to an email sent to the school community.

Montgomery Blair High School in Maryland had an election debriefing with counselors during students' lunch, according to a tweet sent by the school's principal.

Chaos Will Erupt Across America in Less Than 100 Days… No Matter Who Wins the Election

August 30, 2016
(NaturalNews)

The clock is ticking for America. There are 70 days remaining until the presidential election, and after the results are counted, America will be a tinderbox ready to explode no matter who wins.

What follows is an educated analysis of the political friction now escalating in America. Note carefully that nothing in this article should be construed as any intention to call for violence of any kind. I do reference such acts, however, as part of human history as well as likely outcomes in our near future. What I’m offering here is an analysis and a warning, along with a call to prepare for what’s coming.

If Trump wins, the left goes full terror

As I’ve publicly predicted numerous times over the last year, if Donald Trump wins, the radical extreme leftists go on a violent rampage that leads to the rest of us begging for martial law. After half a dozen cities burn with riots and looting, Trump invokes a national emergency, deploying National Guard troops across the most devastated urban areas, and the radical left finds itself in a shooting war with the government.

If Hillary Clinton wins, all the Trump supporters who have been violently assaulted, spat upon and physically attacked by the radical left un-holster their concealed weapons and start shooting back. This quickly escalates into open warfare between lunatic leftist Hillary supporters and armed Trump “Second Amendment” people who basically figure they’ve got nothing left to lose anyway, so why not fight to save America?

This was all pointed out in an insightful reader comment posted to The Burning Platform on August 29th:
With the rise of Donald Trump, the plan of the political elites has been to provoke violence and blame it on him, thus scaring the normal populace. Early-on there were the road-blockings, the threatened riots, the cancelled events in Chicago and Cincinnati, the beatings, the police ordered to “look the other way”…and it has continued: The screaming harassment and physical attacks on Trump supporters as they leave his rallies. The spitting. The intimidation. The thrown eggs. The shoves and punches. The cars blocked and damaged. The hats snatched off people’s heads, stomped on, and then burned on the ground…

The people who support Trump are increasingly well-armed, and increasingly seething with justifiable rage. For now they hold back. Donald Trump himself has repeatedly observed that “the safest place in America” for anti-Trump protesters is at Trump rallies. And that is true. For now (except for the one old cowboy who punched out the protester, he was an octogenarian outlier). Why is this? Why the docility in the face of clear provocation?

It is because Trump supporters understand that any retaliatory violence now will be instantly, widely, and incessantly portrayed by the whorish mainstream media as proof that “Trump is dangerous” and “Trump’s movement is violent” and “Trump invites violence.” So his supporters endure the abuse. They endure the spittle. They endure the shoves and punches. They endure the theft of their possessions. They endure the damaged cars and the incessant harassment. For now, for the sake of their political movement and the candidacy of Donald Trump, they do not strike back…

But what happens after the election? It matters not who wins. If Hillary Clinton is elected, by hook or by crook, the mass movement harnessed by Donald Trump will be free to respond to physical attacks.
If Donald Trump wins the Presidency, there will similarly be no reason to continue to endure physical attacks and humiliations by the street thugs of the Democrats. Whether Trump or Hillary Clinton is in the White House, there will be no reason to hold back.
Hundreds of millions of guns across America are now in the hands of people who are fed up with being stomped on, ridiculed and marginalized by a corrupt leftist regime that’s destroying America

Do the math on this one: You’ve got 44% of U.S. households that now own guns (and not just one gun each, but several different types of guns). Over the last 8 years, President Obama’s anti-gun rhetoric has resulted in the largest surge of gun sales to private citizens ever recorded in American history. As a result of Obama’s criminal efforts to try to destroy the Second Amendment via false flag operations such as Operation Fast and Furious, more Americans than ever now own battle rifles such as ARs, AKs and PTR 91s.

People bought all these guns for a reason. And they sure didn’t buy them just to turn them over to a corrupt criminal government.

The reader comment continues:
Whatever happens after this Presidential election, it will have been unleashed by the corporate elites and their servants in the media and elsewhere. They will be responsible for blood in the streets… And many will cheer it.
What the author is saying is, essentially, America is quite likely just 70 days away from the start of the next revolution… or even events that could escalate into Civil War.

A Hillary victory would set off an immediate popular revolt

If Hillary wins the election, it’s hard not to imagine some sort of popular revolt across America as the citizens reject the obvious criminality and corruption of not just the Clinton crime family but also a complicit mainstream media. The same media that has funneled millions of dollars into the Clinton Foundation also intentionally downplays all the Clinton scandals. The entire system is a corrupt, incestuous, rigged f–kfest that benefits the deceitful plutocrats whom the voters are sick and tired of seeing remain in power.

French Jews Vow to Hold Hanukkah Ceremonies Throughout Paris Despite Warnings from Police (France has Europe's Largest Population of Jews and the Largest Population of Muslims in Western Europe); Palestinian Authority Asks West Bank Municipalities to Tone Done Christmas Celebrations Amid Escalating Violence with Israelis (2% of the Population in the West Bank and Israel are Christians)

Jews Shouldn't Light Menorah For Hanukkah Because Of Anti-Semitic Threats, Paris Police Warn

December 2, 2015

IBT - Paris police are reportedly discouraging Jews from lighting the menorah to mark Hanukkah this weekend, after a series of terror attacks last month killed and wounded hundreds. The warning comes as some Jewish leaders have expressed concern about anti-Semitic threats, after Islamic State group supporters attacked several locations -- including a theater that held pro-Israel events -- on Nov. 13.

Jewish organizations in Paris had vowed to hold public Hanukkah ceremonies, including a live concert, starting at sundown Sunday to honor the Jewish holiday. The Jewish outreach organization Chabad Lubavitch is sponsoring more than 60 celebrations and nightly public menorah lightings around Paris, including at the Eiffel Tower. American Jewish DJ Nachum Segal had scheduled a concert titled “Let There Be Light: The Concert of Jewish Unity,” at the Synagogue de la Victoire, or Grand Synagogue of Paris, next week. The show was organized “to celebrate the lives of those living in France, and to honor the Jewish communities,” according to a news release.
.
France has Europe's largest population of Jews. Last year, more than 6,000 Parisians, dignitaries and visitors participated in The Eiffel Tower menorah lighting. The ceremony has been a tradition for 24 years. [France also has the largest Muslim population in Western Europe, with roughly 4.7 million followers of the faith. Amid growing tensions between Muslims and other French residents, France banned the wearing of Islamic veils and other face coverings in 2011.]

After the November terror attacks in France, extra police were sent to guard the historically Jewish Marais neighborhood in Paris, while a teacher at a Jewish school in Marseilles was stabbed by three attackers who appeared to support the Islamic State group.

In January, Jewish communities in Paris were put on alert after Islamic radicals attacked the Charlie Hebdo magazine office [the French satirical magazine had a history of publishing controversial cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad that angered Muslim leaders in France, the Middle East and other parts of the world] and a kosher supermarket. In 2012, Mohamed Merah, 23, opened fire at an orthodox school in Toulouse in southern France, killing the rabbi and three children. Some Jews have reported removing the mezuzah, the box of parchment Hebrew verses affixed to the entrance of Jewish homes, from their front doors to avoid problems after the attacks.

Palestinian Authority limits Christmas celebrations in West Bank

BETHLEHEM, West Bank — The Palestinian Authority has asked municipalities to tone down their public Christmas celebrations this year amid escalating violence between Palestinians and Israelis.

Hana Amireh, who heads a government committee on churches in the West Bank, confirmed the Palestinian Authority is requesting “a certain decrease” in festivities following the deaths of dozens of Palestinians since mid-September. The majority of them were killed during clashes with Israeli forces or carrying out terrorist attacks, according to the Israeli government.

Amireh said the government has asked the municipality of Bethlehem, the town where Jesus was born and where official Palestinian celebrations of Christmas take place, not to set off holiday fireworks this year and to limit the festive lights and decorations that traditionally adorn the town to two main streets.

Forget the National Guard, Send in Parents to Quell Violent Outbreaks of Teenagers at Protests

Baltimore teenager smacked by 'hero mom' says he's learned his less

May 1, 2015

Yahoo News - The Baltimore teenager who was smacked by his angry mother during Monday's riots — a moment seen in a video that quickly went viral — says he learned a lesson from his public shaming.

In a pair of interviews, Michael Singleton described the confrontation.
"I was just like, 'Oh, man. What is my mother doing down here? Why would she be down here?'" Singleton told CNN's Anderson Cooper. "But when I heard, 'Put that brick down,' I was like, 'Oh, that's my mother.'"
On Tuesday, Toya Graham, the 42-year-old single mother of six, told CBS News that she didn't want to see her only son become "a Freddie Gray," the 25-year-old who died in police custody earlier this month.
"I felt as though my friends were down there," the 16-year-old said of his decision to join the rioters. "A couple of my friends had been beaten by the police, killed by the police. So I felt as though I needed to go down there, show my respect."

"I was so angry with him that he had made a decision to do some harm to the police officers," Graham told Cooper. "I just lost it at that point."
Or, as Singleton put it,
"It was just World War III from right there."

Maryland Governor Hogan Declares State of Emergency and Deploys National Guard in Streets of Baltimore

The cops were ordered to let this riot play out. They even let them burn a few police vehicles just to add to the spectacle. It was purposely allowed to make the situation look bad enough to bring in the National Guard. That is what they want as an excuse for Martial Law and to further militarize the police.

Republican Gov. Hogan Declares State Of Emergency, Activates National Guard

April 27, 2015

CBS – Governor Larry Hogan has declared a state of emergency and activated the National Guard to address the growing violence and unrest in Baltimore City.
“I have not made this decision lightly. The National Guard represents a last resort in order to restore order,” Hogan said during a news conference Monday night. “People have the right to protest and express their frustration, but Baltimore City families deserve peace and safety in their communities and these acts of violence and destruction of property cannot and will not be tolerated.”
Hogan said he executed the request 30 seconds after it was made by Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake.
“When the mayor called me, which quite frankly we were glad that she finally did, we signed the executive order,” he said. “It’s obviously very disappointing to us as Marylanders and people who love the city of Baltimore. What started out as a peaceful protest … I would say 95 percent of the people involved were conducting themselves in a very peaceful manner, it was well under control. We had a lot of outside agitators come in from around the country, and we had some rogue gangs and young people that were just out looking to cause problems.”
Major General Linda Singh, the adjutant general of the Maryland Army National Guard, said during the news conference that the guard would be out in activation beginning Monday night. Up to 5,000 troops were available to patrol the streets and protect property.

Hogan said he spoke to President Obama at length about the violence.
“He supports our actions 100 percent. We talked about the fact that we’ve gotta find — everybody believes we need to get to the answers and resolve this situation, the concern that everybody has about what exactly happened in the Freddie Gray incident. That’s one whole situation. This is an entirely different situation. This is lawless gangs of thugs roaming the streets, causing damage to property and injuring innocent people, and we’re not gonna tolerate that,” he said.
Earlier today, a group of protestors clashed with police officers. Arrests were made in the incident, but unfortunately, some officers were hurt.
“My thoughts and prayers go out to the men and women in uniform who are actively working to stem this violence and several who been injured in the line of duty,” Hogan said in an earlier statement. “These malicious attacks against law enforcement and local communities only betray the cause of peaceful citizens seeking answers and justice following the death of Freddie Gray.”

Question: How do you bypass the 1878 Posse Comitatus Act limiting the military's involvement in law enforcement?

Answer: You militarize law enforcement.

Baltimore is One Step Away From Martial Law Because of a Few Out-of-Towners Who Are Destroying Property

Hours before the riots began Monday, mourners filled the 2,500-capacity New Shiloh Baptist church to attend Freddie Gray's funeral. Gray was arrested by Baltimore Police on April 12 after making eye contact with officers and then running away, police said. He was held down, handcuffed and loaded into a van without a seat belt. Leg cuffs were put on him when he became irate inside. He asked for medical help several times even before being put in the van, but paramedics were not called until after a 30-minute ride. Police have acknowledged he should have received medical attention on the spot where he was arrested, but they have not said how he suffered a serious spine injury. He died April 19. His death has been ruled a homicide and six officers have been charged in the case.

Curfew In Baltimore For Adults And Children: 15 Police Officers Injured, 2 Hospitalized After Bricks, Bottles Thrown

Baltimore police tweeted throughout the day and asked parents earlier in the evening to find and bring home their children, many of whom collectively initiated the chaos as part of a "purge."

April 27, 2015

Inquistr - Along with a state of emergency being issued in Baltimore amid widespread looting, as reported by the Inquisitr, a new curfew has been issued. As reported by WFSB, Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake has announced a curfew that will last from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. — with those aged 14 years and younger urged to stay in under the curfew starting on Monday, and the curfew to also extend to adults on Tuesday beginning from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. There is already a curfew in place for children 13 years of age and under, the mayor reiterated

As soon as the press conference announcement about the curfew was made, the word curfew began to receive a ton of reactions on social media, with folks wondering if the citywide imposed curfew would help to stem the violence and looting.
“What we see tonight going on in our city is very disturbing. We are deploying every resource possible to gain control of this situation and to ensure peace moving forward.”
As reported by CNN, 15 police officers have been injured in the rioting from some sort of flying debris, be it bricks or bottles. Mayor Rawlings-Blake said that Baltimore is not a lawless city and thugs will not prevail, because authorities will use all of the photos and video footage to determine who is responsible for the looting and violence waged against the police officers, and those individuals will be held accountable.
“Anyone who wants to add to peace to our city is welcome, if Rev. Sharpton wants to come… anyone who wants to act within the law.”

Posse Comitatus, Habeas Corpus and the Government's Hunt for Terrorists

Two suspects killed in Belgian anti-terror raid

After the January 7, 2015 shootings at Charlie Hebdo, a French satirical weekly magazine, France is "waging war" against terrorism. France has put the country on high alert and deployed 122,000 police and troops to "protect citizens." And the Belgian government decided to start using its army for some "public security tasks." Across Europe, anxiety has grown as the "hunt" continues for terrorists.

The 130-year-old Posse Comitatus Act in the United States restricts the military’s role in domestic law enforcement, but a 1994 Defense Department Directive allows military commanders to take emergency actions in domestic situations to "save lives, prevent suffering, or mitigate great property damage." [Source]

The John W. Warner Defense Authorization Act of 2007 (PL 109-364) virtually invites the White House to declare federal martial law. It "subverts solid, longstanding Posse Comitatus statutes that limit the military's involvement in law enforcement, thereby making it easier for the President to declare martial law." Section 1031 of the NDAA bill declares the whole of the United States as a “battlefield” and allows American citizens to be arrested on U.S. soil and incarcerated in Guantanamo Bay. Provisions of the NDAA are so radical that they actually remove much of the protections American citizens have had since 1878 under the Posse Comitatus Act and the Non-Detention Act of 1971.

Section 1032 of the NDAA bill puts civilians who would otherwise not be subject to military control into military detention, thus removing the protections of the Posse Comitatus act. Like Section 1031, this would include indefinite imprisonment of civilians apprehended inside of the United States. Section 1032 does not authorize the military to detain civilians without charge or trial -- it, in fact, mandates it. The protection against the government using the military for law enforcement activities within the United States under Posse Comitatus would be eliminated under Section 1032. And the ACLU points out that “all state and federal law enforcement would be preempted by the military.” Previously the state and local law enforcement agencies and the Department of Justice had the primary responsibility to enforce anti-terrorism laws within the United States. The NDAA would, in the case of many civilian suspects, remove federal state and local law enforcement from the process of investigation, arrest, criminal prosecution and imprisonment and hand said powers over to the military.

In December 2011 Infowars received a document originating from Halliburton subsidiary KBR that provides details on a push to outfit FEMA and U.S. Army camps around the United States. Entitled “Project Overview and Anticipated Project Requirements,” the document describes services KBR is looking to farm out to subcontractors. The document was passed on to Infowars by a state government employee who wishes to remain anonymous for obvious reasons. Services up for bid include catering, temporary fencing and barricades, laundry and medical services, power generation, refuse collection, and other services required for temporary “emergency environment” camps located in five regions of the United States. KBR’s call for FEMA camp service bids arrived soon after the Senate overwhelmingly passed the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which permits the military to detain and interrogate supposed domestic terror suspects in violation of the Fourth Amendment and Posse Comitatus.

Latin for "you [should] have the body," habeas corpus is a legal action, or writ, by which those imprisoned unlawfully can seek relief from their imprisonment. Derived from English common law, habeas corpus first appeared in the Magna Carta of 1215 and is the oldest human right in the history of English-speaking civilization. The doctrine of habeas corpus stems from the requirement that a government must either charge a person or let him go free.
“The privilege of the writ of habeas corpus shall not be suspended, unless when in cases of rebellion or invasion the public safety may require it.”—Article I, Section IX of the U.S. Constitution
The United States Constitution specifies that, "the privilege of the writ of habeas corpus shall not be suspended unless, when in cases of rebellion or invasion, the public safety may require it." The Constitution is clear in indicating that suspension is a possibility in specific cases, but vague as to who determines when public safety is in danger. Clearly, it is the President's duty to invoke the suspension, but is it also his duty to determine when an invasion or rebellion threatens the public safety? Or is that the job of the Congress?

Habeas corpus, a fundamental tenet of English common law, does not appear anywhere in the Bill of Rights. Its importance was such that it was enshrined in the Constitution itself. And it is of such magnitude that all other rights, including those in the Bill of Rights, are dependent upon it. Without habeas corpus, the significance of all other rights crumbles.

The right of habeas corpus was important to the Framers of the Constitution because they knew from personal experience what it was like to be labeled enemy combatants, imprisoned indefinitely and not given the opportunity to appear before a neutral judge. Believing that such arbitrary imprisonment is “in all ages, the favorite and most formidable instrument of tyranny,” the Founders were all the more determined to protect Americans from such government abuses.

Both the Fifth Amendment and the Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution prohibit governmental deprivations of "life, liberty, or property, without due process of law." The Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment serves three distinct functions in modern constitutional doctrine: "First, it incorporates [against the States] specific protections defined in the Bill of Rights....Second, it contains a substantive component, sometimes referred to as ‘substantive due process.'...Third, it is a guarantee of fair procedure, sometimes referred to as ‘procedural due process.'..." Daniels v. Williams (1986) (Stevens, J., concurring).

Habeas corpus is an important piece of legislation that should be available in every country. International efforts to establish an international Habeas Corpus court are under way. Today, many democratic countries have the right to petition for habeas corpus. For example, in Australia, the habeas corpus writ originates from the English common law. In Canada, the habeas corpus legal action is also an English law inheritance.

Australia also saw in 2005 some form of habeas corpus suspension when the Australian parliament passed a piece of law called the Australian Anti-Terrorism Act of 2005 that limits the right of habeas corpus for those who are suspected of terrorist activities and arrested on these charges. In Canada, everyone has the right to receive proof for their arrest and contest the decision if evidence is not provided.

Indian judiciary system also uses a doctrine of locus standi, where if a detained person is not in the position to request a habeas corpus petition, a third party can intervene and file the petition in his name. Ireland also grants the right to habeas corpus, but the procedure is not binding during war or in a state of armed rebellion. Malaysia is another example of a country where the right to habeas corpus exists, but it is limited by various internal acts. For example, in Malaysia, the Internal Security Act of 1960 limits habeas corpus by allowing detention without a fair trial for those who are suspected of internal unrest or dangerous activities. In New Zealand, habeas corpus may be petitioned to fight against unfair arrest. The habeas corpus in New Zealand can be used against the government or against private individuals.

All in all, the right for habeas corpus is an important piece of law that gives individuals the power to resist unfair arrest.

European police arrest over 2 dozen in anti-terror sweeps

January 16, 2016

AP - French, German and Belgian police arrested more than two dozen suspects in anti-terrorism raids Friday, as European authorities rushed to thwart more attacks by people with links to Mideast Islamic extremists.

Rob Wainwright, head of the police agency Europol, told The Associated Press that foiling terror attacks has become "extremely difficult" because Europe's 2,500-5,000 radicalized Muslim extremists have little command structures and are increasingly sophisticated.

Highlighting those fears, a bomb scare forced Paris to evacuate its busy Gare de l'Est train station during Friday morning rush hour. No bomb was found. A man also briefly took two hostages at a post office northwest of Paris, but police said the hostage-taker had mental issues and no links to terror.

Visiting the tense French capital, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry met President Francois Hollande and toured the sites of last week's terror attacks: the satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo and a kosher supermarket. Twenty people, including the three gunmen, were killed.

One of those Paris attackers had proclaimed allegiance to the Islamic State group, and French and German authorities arrested at least 14 other people Friday suspected of links to IS.

Thirteen more people were detained in Belgium and two were arrested in France in a separate anti-terror sweep following a firefight Thursday in the eastern Belgian city of Verviers. Two suspected terrorists were killed and a third wounded in that raid on a suspected terrorist hideout. Federal magistrate Eric Van der Sypt said the suspects were within hours of implementing a plan to kill police, either on the street or in their offices.

In more than a dozen raids Friday, Belgian forces found four military-style weapons including Kalashnikov assault rifles, Van der Sypt said. They also found several police uniforms, which could have allowed the suspects to pass themselves off as police officers.

Belgian officials were reasonably confident they dismantled the core of an important terrorist cell but Van der Sypt said more suspects could be at large.
"I cannot confirm that we arrested everyone in this group," he told reporters.
Authorities did not give many details about those detained or killed in Belgium but said most were citizens and some had returned from Syria. They stressed that the targets of their crackdown had no known connections to last week's attacks in France.

French Prime Minister Manuel Valls said Friday that while there was no apparent operational connection between the two terror groups, "the link that exists is the will to attack our values."

Belgium has seen a large number of residents join extremists in Syria.
"It's the worst affected country in Europe relative to population size," said Peter Neumann of the London-based International Center for the Study of Radicalization.
He estimates 450 people have left Belgium to fight with Islamic radicals in Syria and that 150 of them have returned home.

Around the world, protesters rallied against Charlie Hebdo in several countries Friday. The satirical newspaper had 12 employees slain for lampooning the Muslim Prophet Muhammad but it defiantly put a new Muhammad cartoon on the cover of its first post-attacks issue this week. The issue sold out its 3 million copies — more than 50 times its usual press run.

In Karachi, Pakistani students clashed with police and an Agence France-Presse photographer was shot and wounded in the melee. In Algeria, demonstrators protesting Charlie Hebdo thronged the streets of Algiers, the capital.

Many Muslims view the caricatures of Muhammad as a profound insult to Islam.

Across Europe, anxiety has grown as the hunt continues for anyone who helped the three Paris gunmen — French police earlier told AP there could be up to six possible accomplices.

The Paris prosecutor's office said at least 12 people were arrested in anti-terrorism raids in the area, targeting people linked to kosher market gunman Amedy Coulibaly, who claimed ties to the Islamic State group. France has put the country on high alert and deployed 122,000 police and troops to protect citizens, especially at Jewish schools and transport hubs.

The Belgian government on Friday decided to start using its army for some public security tasks, part of a 12-point anti-terror plan lawmakers agreed upon in less than 24 hours since the deadly clash Thursday night.

The government will also expand legislation to make traveling abroad with a terror goal a crime and allowing authorities to withdraw ID from people suspected of traveling to such areas.

In Berlin, police arrested two men Friday morning on suspicion of recruiting fighters for the Islamic State group in Syria. Prosecutors said 250 police officers raided 11 residences at dawn, part of a months-old investigation into Turkish extremists.

Kerry's visit to France came after the Obama administration apologized for not sending a higher-level delegation to Sunday's massive rally in Paris, which drew more than 1 million people to denounce terrorism. Hollande thanked Kerry for offering support.

"You've been victims yourselves of an exceptional terrorist attack on Sept. 11. You know what it means for a country," Hollande said. "Together, we must find appropriate responses."
In a separate speech to diplomats, Hollande said France is "waging war" against terrorism and will not back down from its international military operations against Islamic extremists in Iraq and North Africa. France's Parliament voted this week to extend airstrikes against Islamic State extremists in Iraq.

Belgian authorities are separately looking for possible links between a man they arrested in the southern city of Charleroi for illegal trade in weapons and Coulibaly.

Several other countries are also involved in the hunt for possible accomplices to Coulibaly and the gunmen who attacked the newspaper, brothers Cherif and Said Kouachi.

A senior Iraqi intelligence official told the AP on Friday that Iraqi intelligence officers warned their French counterparts two months ago that a group linked to Khorasan in Syria was plotting an attack in Paris. The official spoke anonymously because he was not authorized to brief media.

Iraq's prime minister also warned in September of possible attacks in New York and Paris.

Federal Unified Agenda is the Obama Administration’s Regulatory Road Map, Laying Out Thousands of Regulations Being Finalized in the Coming Months

With Everyone Focused on Ferguson, Obama Quietly Passing 3,415 New Regulations Before Thanksgiving

November 26, 2014

Why, you might ask?

Because the Obama administration has prepared, for the fifth time now, to oh-so-quietly release 3,415 brand spanking new regulations right before Thanksgiving while everyone just so happens to be totally distracted and focusing on the orchestrated civil disorder going on in Ferguson.

Via The Daily Caller:
The federal Unified Agenda is the Obama administration’s regulatory road map, and it lays out thousands of regulations being finalized in the coming months. Under President Barack Obama, there has been a tradition of releasing the agenda late on Friday — and right before a major holiday.
“It’s become an unfortunate tradition of this administration and others to drop these regulatory agendas late on a Friday and right before a holiday,” Matt Shudtz, executive director of the Center for Progressive Reform, told The Hill newspaper.
The White House’s regulatory agenda for spring 2014 was released on the eve of the Memorial Day weekend, when millions of people set out on weekend getaways or family vacations.
“It’s unfortunate because it’s an update on protections for Americans of all stripes,” Shudtz told the Hill. “It lays out the administration’s plan and it deserves more attention.”
Nice, right?

Apparently, this release comes new and improved with even more regulations than last time, and it even comes complete with the added bonus of having 189 rules which come with a nice fat price tag of $100 million.

It’s funny… Once upon a time, throwing out an amount like a hundred million would’ve made some people’s eyeballs literally pop out of their heads. I can use the word literally in a figurative sense now without being incorrect, because apparently we live in such an Idiocracy society that the official definition of the word “literally” has been updated to include “used for emphasis or to express strong feeling while not being literally true.”

… I’m not even kidding.
literally
See?

Anyway, who knows what evil will be lurking in those 3,415 new regulations. No, really. Who knows? Hardly anyone knows, because these regs will be slipped in under cover of concocted protests in Ferguson, a plate full of turkey and stuffing, and a football game.

Flashback: Robin Hood Tobin Tax is an Transaction-Tax Scam

Robin Hood Tax: Occupy Movement Now Marching Straight into the Globalist Trap

The Robin Hood Tax is an identical transaction-tax scam to the one proposed by globalists at the 2009 UN COP15 Climate Summit in Copenhagen

October 25, 2011

Patrick Henningsen, Infowars.com - It was inevitable that a movement which has struggled to agree on a manifesto, in the end, would do the bidding of the very elite globalist powers that they are demonstrating against to begin with.

Instead of achieving freedom from Central Bank debt enslavement, naive Occupiers appear to have taken the bait, pulling the mob towards endorsing a global taxation system, and one to be administered… by a brand new global government body.

As the Occupy Movement sets its sights on the upcoming G20 Summit in France on November 3-4, its globalist handlers behind the scenes have succeeded in carefully directing its crowds towards the Holy Grail of all socialist super-states — the celebrity supported, trendy “Robin Hood Tax”, also known as a Tobin Tax, a financial transaction tax levied on all transactions involving shares, bonds and derivatives.

It’s likely that such a blanket tax will eventually end up on the end of things like cash withdrawals and the like.

They claim that the resulting funds, counted in the hundreds of billions of dollars per year, would go toward popular Bono-led liberal heart-string fantasy causes like ‘reducing poverty in the third world’, social programs and— surprise, surprise — “combating climate change” and perhaps even saving polar bears — a move that would surely please desperate men like Al Gore (but a complete waste of money seeing that man-made global warming has already been thoroughly discredited).

The rallying cry for this globalist wet dream is coming directly from the supposed brain-child of the Occupy Movement, the globalist foundation-funded organization, Ad Busters, quietly shepherding its flock towards one of the biggest revenue spinning and control scams ever conceived.

Reuters reported yesterday:
“Canada-based Adbusters wants the Occupy Wall Street protest movement against economic inequality to take to the streets to call for a 1 percent tax on such deals ahead of a November 3-4 summit of the Group of 20 leading economies in France.
“Let’s send them a clear message: We want you to slow down some of that $1.3 trillion easy money that’s sloshing around the global casino each day — enough cash to fund every social program and environmental initiative in the world,” the activist group said on its website, www.adbusters.org.
Adbusters put out the initial call for Occupy Wall Street and since protesters set up camp in a park in New York City’s financial district on September 17, they have inspired solidarity demonstrations and so-called occupations around the world.”
In many ways, the Robin Hood Tax is an identical transaction-tax scam to the one proposed by globalists at the 2009 UN COP15 Climate Summit in Copenhagen, where a number of new taxes on financial transactions and new carbon taxes would be put into a giant “slush fund” to be handled by none other than the World Bank.

Ultimately, any Robin Hood Tax will most likely end up in a giant fund to “ensure that banks are adequately capitalized”, and one which will be used to bailout, or insure big bank losses and trillions in gambling derivative bets gone bad.

In reality, a Robin Hood Tax does just the opposite of what its name represents. Rather than stealing from the rich and giving to the poor, it is designed to steal more money through taxation from working people — money which will end up directly in the hands of institutions like the US Federal Reserve and its cartel of Wall Street banks.

One Day Soon, We'll All Be 'Homegrown Terrorists'

Homeland Security Secretary Johnson announces tighter security at federal buildings

October 28, 2014

Yahoo News - Department of Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson announced on Tuesday that the government is stepping up security at federal buildings in Washington, D.C., and nationwide, citing enhanced risks of “small-scale attacks by a lone offender.”
“The reasons for this action are self-evident: the continued public calls by terrorist organizations for attacks on the homeland and elsewhere, including against law enforcement and other government officials, and the acts of violence targeted at government personnel and installations in Canada and elsewhere recently,” Johnson said in a recent statement.
The secretary appeared to be referring to the fatal shooting at the Canadian Parliament building.

Johnson also urged state and local governments “to be equally vigilant, particularly in guarding against potential small-scale attacks by a lone offender or a small group of individuals.”

The secretary did not spell out what form the increased security would take, and emphasized that it “will vary and shift from location to location.” He did not explicitly cite the rise of the so-called Islamic State. Law enforcement officials have regularly expressed concern that the extremist group could inspire “lone wolf” solo terrorist attacks in the United States, or that Americans who joined the extremist group could travel back to the United States and bring the war home.

The new security measures have no expiration date, a DHS official told Yahoo News. A congressional aide briefed on the measures said it was his understanding that they would last beyond the elections and that the Federal Protective Service would be stepping up its visible presence at key facilities nationwide.
“We are taking this action as a precautionary step, to safeguard U.S. government personnel and facilities, and the visitors to those facilities,” Johnson said in a written statement. “Given world events, prudence dictates a heightened vigilance.”

Sheriff Departments Across the U.S. Defending Defense Department Programs for the Militarization of Law Enforcement with Surplus Equipment

Weapons of war beefing up local police arsenals

'Police militarization' faces criticism, though Hampton Roads sheriffs, police officials defend defense department program to turn over surplus equipment to law enforcement. The Department of Defense’s Excess Property Program, commonly referred to as the 1033 Program, sends unneeded military equipment like weapons and body armor to local police forces for no cost.

September 28, 2014

Daily Press - A large armored vehicle that in recent years patrolled the battlefields of the Middle East now stands at the ready in York County.

Once used to help American troops avoid getting killed or maimed by roadside bombs, the imposing vehicle was turned over to the York-Poquoson Sheriff's Office in May under a long-standing program to allow law enforcement agencies to use military surplus equipment.

It's among 620 Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected Vehicles — also called "MRAPs" — recently doled out to cities and counties nationwide as wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have wound down. And they're free to local agencies, except for shipping costs.

Moreover, hundreds of military assault rifles — most of them M-16s — were sent to local police departments and sheriff's offices in Hampton Roads between 2006 and 2012, according to a recent Defense Department spreadsheet.

Hampton, Newport News, Gloucester, Isle of Wight and Poquoson have together received more than 300 such rifles, according to the Aug. 20 list from the Defense Logistics Agency.

The Hampton Police led the way with 115 rifles, though it's giving them back as it transitions to department-purchased AR-15s that are smaller, lighter and come with night sights, a police spokesman said.

Newport News obtained 85 rifles, including 75 M-16s, while James City County Police Department has gotten 67 rifles, with both agencies saying many of the guns were issued to tactical and patrol officers certified on the weapons.

One police agency in Isle of Wight got optical gun sights, as well as night vision and infrared equipment. Mathews obtained a system to conceal or scatter radar signatures. New Kent received a grenade launcher.

Both the City of Franklin, population 8,600, and Virginia Beach got MRAPs like the one that went to York, while several agencies obtained various trucks.

But now, the surplus transfer program is under increasing scrutiny from the White House and congressional lawmakers. That follows recent events in Ferguson, Mo., where police outfitted with military-style gear — using armored vehicles, tear gas and smoke bombs — responded to gatherers protesting a fatal police shooting in August.

One recent bill, sponsored by a Georgia congressman and co-sponsored by U.S. Rep. Robert C. "Bobby" Scott, D-Newport News, aims to restrict the program.

Equipping police forces

The Department of Defense's "1033" initiative began in the mid-1990s with congressional authorization, mainly to help law enforcement agencies combat drug trafficking. It offers everything from general equipment such as desks and exercise equipment, to guns, armored vehicles and even planes.

Under the program, tactical items are technically on loan to the police agencies. Ownership of the weaponry is maintained by the federal government. If the local agency no longer wants a weapon, they must give it back.

The ACLU — which has been complaining in recent years about what it calls a trend toward "militarized policing" — contended in a June report that having free access to such weapons has led police to use more heavy-handed tactics. The organization also blames equipment grants from the Justice Department and Department of Homeland Security.

President Barack Obama expressed concern at a September news conference about the response at Ferguson, calling for a re-examination of the military's surplus program.

One of the great things about the United States, Obama said, is the "distinction" between police and the military, saying it "helps preserve our civil liberties."
"There is a big difference between our military and our local law enforcement, and we don't want those lines blurred," he said. "That would be contrary to our traditions."
Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., considered a leading Republican candidate for president in 2016, has also voiced alarm. The "militarizing" is worrisome, he wrote, particularly in light of "eroding" civil liberties, such as an increased use of "no-knock" search warrants and the forfeiture of people's assets without convictions.
"Big government has been at the heart of the problem," Paul wrote in Time magazine on Aug. 14. "Washington has incentivized the militarization of local police precincts by using federal dollars to help municipal governments build what are essentially small armies — where police departments compete to acquire military gear that goes far beyond what most Americans think of as law enforcement."
Controlling the flow of weapons

On Sept. 16, U.S. Rep. Hank Johnson, D-Georgia, introduced the "Stop Militarizing Law Enforcement Act," designed to "stop the free flow" of excess Defense Department military weapons "from battlefields directly to the streets of America."
"When law enforcement uses military MRAPs on Main Street, that changes the relationship with the public," Johnson said on the House floor. "Our country is not a war zone, and it should not feel like one."
Scott signed on as a co-sponsor, as did 33 others — 29 Democrats and four Republicans.

Under the bill, the Defense Department would be barred from transferring to police departments "automatic weapons that are not recognized as suitable for law enforcement," including any guns .50-caliber or greater. On Thursday, Scott said many rifle transfers would still likely be allowed.

The legislation would ban the transfer of armored vehicles, drones, aircraft, flash bang grenades, stun grenades and gun silencers.
"If you need a military-style operation, it appears to me that you should call in the military, people that are actually trained in using these things," Scott said Thursday. "How often does a local county sheriff actually use a tank? And how well trained will his deputies be in using a tank? If you need a tank, the local National Guard can get one out there in no time."
Getting such a piece of equipment should be a policy decision, he said.
"If York County needs a tank," Scott said, "the county ought to appropriate the money and buy it."
Scott said he didn't have an immediate answer as to what he thought should be done with the unused equipment if it didn't go to police. But, he said, "getting this equipment so they can practice military operations against local citizens is in my view inappropriate."

Defending the weapons

Many in local law enforcement, however, have a very different take.

York-Poquoson Sheriff J.D. "Danny" Diggs defended his acquisition of the MRAP, saying it won't be routinely used. But it can help rescue and protect citizens and deputies alike in extreme situations, from a natural disaster to a hostage crisis to a school shooting.
"If we had deputies down in a situation, we could roll up to them and rescue them," Diggs said. Or in the case of a barricaded suspect, he added, "we could get in a little closer to establish some kind of communication."
And because the six-wheel-drive armored vehicle can drive into 3 feet of water, he said, "if we needed to evacuate people out of some water, we could do that as well." Sometimes, Diggs said, "you don't just want to show up in a patrol car."

Diggs added that he understands how such equipment "can be negatively perceived." But, he said, "the perceived abuse by one agency does not affect every agency in the country."
"Who's abusing it?" Diggs said of his MRAP, saying it's "not a tank."
He also disputes the notion of widespread "police militarization."
"Other than having an MRAP, I'm no more militarized than I was 15 years ago when I took office," Diggs said. "So does that one piece of equipment that has multiple uses, and that will rarely if ever be used, make me some kind of military agency now? The answer is no."
Aside from the new armored vehicle, Diggs said, the only other surplus items his 94-person department has received from the program are 40 backpacks, some binoculars, and five shotguns that have been converted to less-than-lethal weapons that shoot beanbags.

He also said the armored vehicle is a good deal for county taxpayers. The Pentagon originally paid $733,000 for the MRAP in 2008, with Diggs saying it's now valued at about $400,000. The cost to the Sheriff's Office was only the $6,500 to ship it from Texas, with Diggs estimating maintenance at about $500 annually.

Isle of Wight Sheriff Mark Marshall, whose office has acquired two utility trucks, four rifles and eight digital cameras under the program, said "we're all trying to do more with less, as budgets continue to shrink."
"A lot of this equipment can be appropriately converted to civilian law enforcement," Marshall said. "The community and agency just have to weigh it out. Is there a utility? What's the maintenance? And is there a need that they foresee?"
He spoke of a Los Angeles case from 1997, in which two bank robbers armed with assault rifles had injured civilians, and "the weaponry the LAPD had to confront them was insufficient." Eventually, Marshall said, police had to take over a Brinks truck to evacuate the wounded.

Newport News Police spokesman Lou Thurston also brought up the 1997 incident, saying some of the officers went to a nearby gun shop, telling the owners that, "We're in a gun battle and need some firepower."

James City County Deputy Police Chief Steve Rubino said his department has gotten 67 military rifles during the past 10 years or so.
"It's a necessary piece of equipment to address deadly threats at a greater and safer distance more accurately," he said.
But he said the department tries to factor in public perception when acquiring new equipment. Last year, the police considered buying a new kind of bulletproof vest that's worn outside an officer's uniform. But the department decided against the move, Rubino said, because of the "appearance and image that they presented to the public."

The Williamsburg-James City Sheriff's Office has acquired 15 military rifles under the Defense Department program. The office doesn't provide primary law enforcement, with deputies providing court security, prisoner transport and the serving of court paperwork. But sometimes they help back up the police, Sheriff Bob Deeds said.
"And if someone were to come into the (courthouse) with something aside from a handgun ... then we have to be ready," Deeds said. Given the cost of new rifles, he said, getting the guns at shipping cost "was a pretty good deal in terms of saving taxpayers money."
Dana Schrad, executive director of the Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police, touted the fact that the military's surplus program doesn't just transfer weapons, but everything from desks to lockers, from bulletproof vests to outer wear.

She asked what would become of the military weaponry if it didn't go to police:
"Do we really want to see them publicly auctioned off to people who are not in fact in a position to protect and serve?"
Schrad spoke of the students walking out of Columbine High School in Colorado with their hands up in 1999. If a sniper was at a school window, she said, "he could have picked off those kids." But an armored vehicle could go in and rescue them.
"On the rare occasion that it's used, it may be the only piece of equipment that can make a difference between saving a life or not," Schrad said. "This equipment can help the public, and not so much endanger the public."
Any potential misuse of the weapons, Schrad said, is curtailed by good training and policy, and by laws and court decisions outlawing excessive police force.

In his application for the MRAP in January, Diggs said his tactical team uses a modified and unprotected Ford Econoline van. Diggs said he initially wanted a smaller version of the armored vehicle, but only the larger version was available.
"We compare it to a generator — it's not worth much to many people until you need it," he said. "Would we have gone out to buy one of these out of local taxpayer money? The answer is no. Is it too big, is it overkill? The answer is yes. But it's at very low cost to us … and we hope we never have to use it."
There's a hatch atop the MRAP, near where a gun was once mounted. There are a couple bullet marks on the windows left over from wartime. The vehicle will soon be painted with a York-Poquoson Sheriff's Office logo, Diggs said, but will be made available to other cities and counties in Hampton Roads, too.

It's all about being prepared, Diggs said.
"Some people will criticize us because we got one," he said. "But others will criticize us if we didn't have one — and some kind of incident happened where we needed it. They'd say, 'It was available. Why didn't you get one?' "
