House Approves $3.53 Trillion Budget

House Approves Paul Ryan Budget Plan

March 29, 2012

The Ticket - The U.S. House of Representatives on Thursday approved a $3.53 trillion budget proposal that would reduce spending by more than $5 trillion over 10 years compared to President Barack Obama's budget recommendations, would overhaul the federal Medicare program, and would reduce taxes and spending on certain programs.

The House voted 228-191 to pass the bill with 10 Republicans opposing it. Democrats unanimously opposed the measure.

The bill, championed by House Budget Chairman Paul Ryan, R-Wis., is destined for almost sure defeat in the Democrat-led Senate, but its passage in the House will be used by Republicans to contrast the spending priorities of each party.

The projections within the bill are based on the assumption that the federal health care law will be repealed, and while the plan reduces spending, it would still leave federal coffers with a deficit of nearly $800 billion in 2013. The tax code would be changed to reduce the six current tax brackets to just two, with a top rate of 25 percent for high earners and 10 percent for those with lower incomes. The plan would also reduce the corporate tax rate—currently one of the highest in the industrialized world—to 25 percent and eliminate some tax credits and loopholes.

One of the most criticized parts of the proposal would overhaul the nation's Medicare program by transitioning it toward a voucher system while preserving the current program for those 55 and older.

Speaking from the House floor Wednesday, Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., criticized the bill for trimming government spending for students and overhauling the current Medicare structure.

"For the sake of our seniors, for our families, for our children, for our workers—I urge my colleagues to vote 'no' on the Republican plan," Pelosi said. House Democrats proposed their own budget, which the House shot down.

The chamber also rejected a budget proposal based on Obama's blueprint and proposals introduced by the conservative Republican Study Committee and the liberal Progressive Caucus.

All of the Republican presidential candidates have embraced the key parts of the Ryan budget plan, which is sure to be used as a campaign issue in all of the November races

TSA Manager Arrested for Running Prostitution Ring

TSA Manager Arrested for Running Prostitution Ring (Video)

The agency received a similar complaint in 2009 about Livingston, who has been employed by the TSA for the past 9 years

March 29, 2012

myfoxdc - A manager at the Transportation Security Administration has lost his job after being arrested on prostitution-related charges. According to court documents, the agency had received a complaint of "very similar" activities back in 2009.

Bryant Jermaine Livingston, 39, was arrested while on the job as a supervisor of TSA agents at Dulles International Airport. The Manassas, Virginia resident, said by phone he is innocent of the charges, but declined to discuss the details of the case.

According to charging documents, on February 15th, Livingston used cash to rent a room at the Crowne Plaza Hotel on Georgia Ave. in Silver Spring, Md. The hotel manager recognized Livingston as a previous customer who, on earlier occasions had "groups of males and females frequently entering and exiting Livingston's room," according to a court document.

Similar activity was happening on February 15, so the manager called Montgomery County Police to report likely prostitution. Responding officers offered to accompany the manager as she went to evict the people from the room.

At the doorway, Livingston denied prostitution was occurring, and invited the manager and police into the room.

Responding officers say they saw, "11 people inside the room [including] three naked females and four males attempting to get dressed. Multiple people were laying on the two beds and other people were sitting in chairs and standing in the room."

In a hallway interview, Bryant Livingston told the police officers he "runs the airport security at Dulles," according to the charging document.

A spokesman for the Transportation Security Administration confirmed that Livingston had worked for the agency since Oct. 29, 2002, but he is now "no longer employed by TSA."

In a subsequent interview, one of the men in the room told Montgomery County police that, "he paid Livingston $100 to enter the hotel room to engage in sexual activities." Charging documents also say a TSA investigator told police that, "in 2009, a very similar complaint concerning Livingston was on record. The complaint alleged that Livingston was operating a prostitution ring and charging individuals $25. for sexual acts."

The TSA spokesman had no immediate explanation as to what, if anything, the agency did about the earlier complaint.

Bryant Livingston is facing five prostitution-related charges. His attorney, Jason Cleckner, declined to comment on the case. Livingston has been released on his own recognizance, and faces trial on May 8th.

In Maryland, a person convicted of prostitution can face up to a year in jail.

TSA Statement:
“TSA cooperated fully with law enforcement during their investigation into this matter. The allegations against this individual are unacceptable and in no way reflect the integrity and professionalism of the more than 50,000 security officers who strive every day to ensure the security of the traveling public.”

Sarkozy Meets with Obama to Propose a 'Reinvention' of the New World Economy

President Sarkozy of France Says Europe and America Must Come Up With New Answers

March 29, 2010

Talk Radio News Service - ... Sarkozy emphasized that if Europe and America do not redesign the global financial architecture, then no other alliance will succeed. He highlighted the urgent need for an open discussion on the economic crisis and world economic regulation.
“We can no longer expect a capitalist system where there are no rules, no regulation, no protectionism.”
Sarkozy will meet with President Obama tomorrow to discuss the global economic collapse and to propose a “reinvention” of the new world economy. He will also congratulate Obama on his reform of the health care system.

Additionally, Mr. Sarkozy cited the escalation and crash of oil prices and fossil fuels and the need for countries producing these resources to regulate prices.

He also called for a full reform of the United Nations Security Council where not a single African country (1 billion people) is represented.
“Nor is there a single Arab country represented or India, where there are over 1 billion people and it is the second most powerful economy and does not have a seat–why is that the case? How do you expect to regulate without these countries? Is that responsible? Does that make any sense to you?” he added.
Sarkozy and Prime Minister Gordon Brown of the United Kingdom recently initiated a greater push for full reform of the Security Council.

He added that Iran must not be allowed to “get its hands on nuclear weapons” and that the alliance between Europe and the United States is particularly essential in this regard. He also gave praise to Obama in working to fight terrorism and said the Moscow train bombings this morning demonstrate the urgency for the world community to work together to put an end to global terrorism.

Rising Prices Are Making Some Statistics Look Better Than They Really Are

Don’t Be Fooled by the Money Illusion

Many economic numbers don’t account for inflation

March 20, 2012

MarketWatch - Rising prices are making some statistics look better than they really are.

Now that inflation is beginning to pick up, it is vital to distinguish between what is real and what is just an illusion caused by inflation. If one does not, one might very well come away with the impression that the economy is shifting into higher gear when, in fact, it is not.

Kellner's Forecasts
date report forecast previous
March 27 Consumer confidence 72.0 70.8
March 28 Durable-goods orders 1.5% -3.7%
March 29 Q4 GDP, revision 3% 3%
March 29 Weekly jobless claims 345,000 348,000
March 30 Personal income 0.5% 0.3%
March 30 Consumer spending 1.2% 0.2%
March 30 Core PCE price index 0.3% 0.2%
March 30 Chicago PMI 65.0 64.0
March 30 Consumer sentiment 76.0 75.3

Take retail sales, for example. On the surface they are encouraging, since February’s sales gain was the most in five months. And since retail sales are one-half of consumers’ spending, which in turn makes up two-thirds of overall economic activity, one might be tempted to conclude that the worst is over.

One would be wrong. First of all, these are dollar figures, adjusted for the time of year but not for inflation. Second, most of the rise reflected a 6% surge in gasoline prices.

Excluding gasoline, retail sales went up at a much more subdued pace. And if you factor in higher prices for such other items as heat, food and health care, retail sales were virtually unchanged in the month — if not for the past few.

It is always important to strip away the effects of inflation and look at actual units purchased. After all, real spending determines real output which in turn provides real jobs. And when day is done, jobs are of paramount importance to this economy.

To be sure, certain stats are real — that is, they are expressed in unit terms, free from the influence of rising prices. These include employment, unemployment and the unemployment rate.

Also in this group are industrial production, capacity use and housing starts, sales and supplies of unsold homes. Some indexes like consumer sentiment and confidence are OK, too.

However other very important numbers do not separate inflation from units. These include corporate profits (and just about everything else on Corporate America’s financial statements), inventories and even the leading indicators.

Getting back to retail sales, it is important to be aware that rising gasoline prices will not be confined just to this category. Indeed, because they are used to transport goods, power machinery and as a feedstock in the production of plastics, clothing and many other items, rising prices of gas and oil will ripple throughout the economy — especially since the Federal Reserve has flooded the economy with lots of cheap, easy money.

This surge in prices is already having a deleterious effect on people’s ability to spend. Average weekly earnings, adjusted for inflation, fell 0.3% last month on top of a 0.1% decline in January. Over the past year, this important measure of consumers’ buying power is down 0.4%.

This lack of growth in buying power does not bode well for the economy. People simply don’t have the cash or the borrowing power to buy goods at last year’s prices, much less at today’s higher tags.

This is why most forecasters think that economic growth slowed in the first quarter to 1.7% — little more than half of the fourth quarter’s pace. They don’t see much faster growth next quarter, either.

And that’s no illusion.

Man Wins Injunction Against Google after Claiming Auto-complete Web Search Ruined His Life

Man Wins Injunction Against Google after Claiming Auto-complete Web Search Ruined His Life

March 26, 2012

Digital Trends – Google’s auto-complete feature — also known as Google Instant — is both handy and amusing, as it not only lets you find those tricky search phrases and ensure your spelling is correct, but also marvel at the baffling things your fellow humans have searched for in the past.

However, one Japanese man hasn’t found it amusing at all, as when he searches for his own name, it returns suggestions linking him with crimes he claims he hasn’t committed. It’s not just a couple of pages either, as he says by choosing one of the options returns at least 10,000 individual results.

Having been turned down by Google after requesting the terms be removed, the man, who has not been named, sought an injunction against the search giant through the Japanese courts.

This isn’t all about vanity either, as his lawyer claims the man lost his job and been turned down for others due to the search results, presumably after potential employers performed the almost de rigueur Google check before extending an offer.

After the case was adjudicated on 19 March, it has now been announced that the Tokyo court has approved the injunction and ruled that Google must suspend its auto-complete results.

Google has refused to comply with the order, and according to the Japan Times, has said it “will not be regulated by Japanese law” and that “the case does not warrant deleting the auto-complete suggestions.” Further legal action has been threatened.

Legal battles and controversy

Introduced near the end of 2010, Google Instant almost immediately attracted complaints, most notably from Yahoo, who blamed the service for a drop in its search market share.

More recently, a similar case in France saw Google remove the words “rapist” and “satanist” from searches involving a man’s name. Oddly, the man was convicted of corrupting a minor, so why it’s fighting against protecting the privacy of an innocent man in Japan is anyone’s guess.

Google creates its list of suggested results by using data from other searches, both long-term and current, along with geographical location and language. To weed out any offensive or indecent search phrases, Google Instant relies on a set of strict filters.

Despite repeated problems, there’s still no clear way to complain to Google about Instant results, as Google’s own Help page merely directs users with questions to the busy Google Search Forum rather than a dedicated page.

Google isn’t the only one to offer search suggestions though, as Bing, Yahoo and even DuckDuckGo all provide similar services. So one wonders whether the unfortunate Japanese man’s ordeal has only just begun.

6.4 Earthquake Rattles Northern Japan, No Risk of Tsunami

Strong Earthquake Rattles Northern Japan, No Risk of Tsunami

March 27, 2012

AP - A strong earthquake shook northern Japan on Tuesday, but no damage was reported and there was no risk of a tsunami.

The Japan Meteorological Agency recorded a 6.4 preliminary magnitude. The agency said there may be a small change in sea levels but did not issue tsunami warnings.

The epicenter was off the coast of Iwate and was about 10 kilometers (6 miles) below the sea surface.

Iwate is in the region heavily damaged by last year’s earthquake and tsunami. The massive magnitude-9.0 earthquake and tsunami on March 11, 2011, left some 19,000 people dead or missing, wreaked widespread damage along the northeastern coast and triggered the worst nuclear accident since Chernobyl. Rebuilding has yet to fully begin in many coastal communities.

No damage or injury was reported from Tuesday’s tremor.

There were no abnormalities reported at nuclear power plants in the region, including the Fukushima Dai-ichi plant that had been crippled by last year’s disasters, operators said. All but one of Japan’s 54 nuclear plants are offline, most of them for safety inspections.

Obama's Choice to Head World Bank Has Links to Big Pharma and Vaccines

Who is Jim Kim, Obama’s Choice to Head World Bank?

March 23, 2012

The Envoy - Pres. Obama announced Jim Kim (second from left) as his pick to be the next World Bank president March 23, 2012. …It's fair to say that surprise was the initial Beltway reaction to President Obama's announcement Friday that he'd picked Dartmouth president Jim Yong Kim as the U.S. nominee to lead the World Bank.

Kim, a Harvard-trained medical doctor, anthropologist and former World Health Organization official, is not a familiar creature around Washington circles. White House whispers had previously floated more well-known political figures for the position being vacated in June by Robert Zoellick—Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, former White House economic adviser Larry Summers, Sen. John Kerry and U.N. envoy Susan Rice, to name a few.

But it didn't take long for the rave reviews from the global health and development community to come in. Kim was an inspired choice, they said, to head the 187-nation bank, whose mission is to fight poverty and promote development.

"This [the choice] is much more significant than 'he is not a Washington insider,'" Heather Hurlburt, a former Clinton administration official who is now executive director of the progressive National Security Network, told Yahoo News.

Hurlburt met Kim about ten years ago when she worked with Bono on the One campaign anti-poverty initiative.

"This is someone who has actually done development. Have we ever had a World Bank president whose specialty is development? He is a practitioner."
Even former President Bill Clinton weighed in.
"Jim Kim is an inspired and outstanding choice to lead the World Bank," he said in a statement, that noted Kim's "years of commitment and leadership to development and particularly health care and AIDS treatment across the world."

Kim, who moved to the United States from South Korea when he was five years old, went on to earn degrees from Brown and Harvard Medical School, and a Harvard doctorate in anthropology, with a Ph.D. thesis focused on pharmaceutical companies.

He was also a MacArthur "genius" grantee. In the 1980s, he was among a small group of doctors and anthropologists working in central Haiti who started a community-based global health organization called Partners in Health. He led Partners in Health's work in Peru during an epidemic of drug-resistant tuberculosis in the mid-1990s, where he helped negotiate lower prices from pharmaceutical companies to get poor people access to life-saving medications. He and Partners were later invited to treat Russian prisoners in Tomsk who had become infected with tuberculosis. More recently, Kim has led the World Health Organization's department of anti-HIV/AIDS initiatives.

"Jim was leading our effort in Peru, when we happened across an epidemic of drug-resistant tuberculosis," Ophelia Dahl, executive director and fellow co-founder of Partners in Health, told Yahoo News on Friday. "And it was a remarkable thing." Kim's work "looked at why people were dying when drugs were available, and he challenged the policy, to make sure that people had access to treatments that were shown to work."

Kim's work helped challenge and transform thinking in the global health community "to see that these diseases are extremely treatable by expanding access to effective treatments to the poor," Dahl said.

Kim's strength is not just informed by his work with communities in the developing world, Hurlburt noted, but also in being effective while leading some highly politicized and bureaucratic institutions, like Dartmouth College and the World Health Organization.

"The stuff you have to deal with running an Ivy League university is in some ways a lot more excellent preparation than anyone would like to admit for running an international institution," she said, adding that Kim is also a "seriously nice man."

A Summary of the Causes of World War II

A Summary of the Causes of World War II

angelfire.com - The causes of war have long been a source of mystery, but many ideas have been developed along the lines of what causes war. It might be said that the most spoken of causes for wars are as follows:
  • A common enemy to a nation
  • An outside threat to a nation
  • Mob mentality, or the power of inspiration in the masses
  • Inspiration by some other outside cause
All of the above can be tied many times over to Hitler and Nazi Germany, as I have demonstrated below, in listing the major causes:
  • Anti-Communism (outside threat and a common enemy); many of the forces which Hitler was able to bring under control in Germany were actually opposed to Nazi rule, but accepted the rule, if only as temporary, for the greater goal of eliminating the spreading Bolshevism in Russia. Hitler often expounded upon these ridiculous fears in his propaganda , promising an end to Bolshevism and the threat of communist takeover.

  • Anti-Semitism (outside threat and a common enemy); Anti-Semitist policies of Nazi Germany were closely tied to Anti-Communism and the "Red Scare," and the Jews were blamed for Bolshevism and its spread. Anti-Semitism, too, was magnified in German lands by the use of subtle and not-so-subtle propaganda.

  • Adolph Hitler's charisma (inspiration); when studying the causes of World War II, perhaps the most baffling aspect of the Nazi rise to power involves the leader himself. Hitler seemed to have a hold over his people by use of a steady and unwavering charisma. Even when the war was inevitably to belost and the people of Germany were disgusted with the entire war, many blamed the other Nazi leaders, never removing Hitler from his pedestal. Furthermore, Hitler had a strongly developed understanding of the desires of the German people, and was always able to aim his promises in exactly the right directions.

  • The Propaganda used by the Nazi party (Mob mentality); again, Hitler and Goebbels made explicit use of the mob mentality to rally the masses behing the Nazi flag. Hitler stated many times that the only way to use propaganda effectively was to aim it at the stupidity of the masses rather than the intellectuals. He used short slogans repeated again and again to drive ideas home into the minds of his followers. More importantly, however, Hitler staged massive Nazi support rallies such as the Nuremburg Rallies in November each year, in which the people could look around and see how many "fellow countrymen" were upholding the ideals of the Nazis. This mass support Hitler used to demonstrate the power of the Nazi government, and to encourage continued support for the Third Reich.

  • The idea of the November Criminals and the Treaty of Versailles (A common enemy to the nation); again, while the Treaty of Versailles had been a thorn in the sides of Germans for almost twenty years, Hitler was an opportunist when it came to building upon this shame and humiliation. Not only did he denounce the powers who had written the treaty, trying to hold Germany down, but he blamed the signing on Jewish-Bolshevik rule.

  • The ideals of the Aryan race and subhuman races (a common enemy to the nation); in adding to his ideas of the evil and sub-humanity of other races, such as the Slavs and Jews, Hitler gave a sense of pride to all Germans, who, he claimed, were innately superior.

  • The Lost Generation from World War I (Mob mentality); World War I had produced an entire generation of youth who had gone into a war of an extent which none could have guessed. This youth had no training in peace time careers, and, when the first Great War ended in 1918, knew nothing but the art of war. Thus, the "Lost Generation" of German youth, displaced by its own society, played a major role in supporting Nazi rule and the onset of WWII, as well as many of the brutalities which occurred under Nazi occupation of other countries.

  • The Great Depression, Dawes Plan and German Reparation Payments (Inspiration -- in rebuilding Germany to its former glory); Hitler was able to add to the sense of pride which many felt at the acknowledgement of their "pure and superior Aryan blood" by claiming responsibility for the growing economy after the Great Depression and the Treaty of Versailles. The inspiration of a new German nation rebuilding itself to its former glory, in addition to the security of finally having jobs and food, tempted many possible resistors of Nazi rule to ignore the regime.

Everything Is Spying On You

Everything Is Spying on You

Forget '1984', the ‘Internet of things’ is the ubiquitous surveillance grid

March 26, 2012

Infowars.com - George Orwell was merely scratching the surface with telescreens – the 21st century home as a surveillance hub will outstrip anything you read about in 1984. From dishwashers to light bulbs, so-called “smart homes” will allow industry and the government to spy ubiquitously on every aspect of your existence.

CIA chief David Petraeus has hailed the “Internet of things” as a transformational boon for “clandestine tradecraft”. In other words, it will soon be easier than ever before to keep tabs on the population since everything they use will be connected to the web, with total disregard for privacy considerations. The spooks won’t have to plant a bug in your home, you will be doing it for them.

“Items of interest will be located, identified, monitored, and remotely controlled through technologies such as radio-frequency identification, sensor networks, tiny embedded servers, and energy harvesters — all connected to the next-generation internet using abundant, low-cost, and high-power computing,” said Petraeus.

Soon you will have to live like a reclusive luddite if you hope to escape the new panopticon of surveillance that will be gratefully lapped up by the masses as a necessary sacrifice for convenience and cutting edge technology.

  • Google has announced it will use the ambient background noise of a person’s environment, via their cell phone or computer microphone, to spy on their activities in order to direct targeted advertising at them.
  • Microsoft X-Box Kinect games device has a video camera and a microphone that records speech. Microsoft has stated that users “should not expect any level of privacy concerning your use of the live communication features,” and the company “may access or disclose information about you, including the content of your communications.”
  • The latest range of digital televisions also have a built-in HD camera, microphones and facial and speech recognition, which are all connected to the Internet. Companies like Samsung have failed to even craft a privacy policy that applies to the devices, meaning its open season on snooping and data harvesting.
  • Forget the government having to implant a chip in your forehead, the modern smart phone, owned by the vast majority of the population, does just as good a job. Five years ago we warned that the first incarnation of the iPhone contained a backdoor spyware module that allowed hackers or the government to conduct secret surveillance of the user. Cell phone surveillance is now ubiquitous. Google was also recently caught tracking the surfing habits of iPhone users via a code that disables the Safari browser’s privacy settings.
  • Google’s attitude towards privacy also came under scrutiny when it was discovered that the company was spying on WiFi network data in violation of the Federal Wiretap Act as it gathered images for its Streetview program.
  • The most obvious example of all is the Internet itself. ISPs have announced they will keep records of websites visited for at least 12 months, along with details of private communications. This figure is constantly increasing, with the FBI now pushing for ISPs to retain such information for years.

Since most people have already taken the decision to sacrifice their privacy for convenience, all of the technologies listed above will be used to spy on individuals and harvest data which will then be sold to big corporations. The vast majority simply do not care. They value the novelty of a fridge being able to tell you when you’re out of milk and automatically ordering more via the Internet more than they do their own privacy.

Whether they will begin to care about the fact that they are broadcasting everything about their private lives and allowing governments and corporations to harvest that data when it actually begins to blowback on them in negative ways remains to be seen. The fact that some employers are now demanding Facebook passwords from their staff is perhaps the first sign of how this could all come crumbling down.

Wall Street Bailouts Resulted in an Unprecedented Concentration of Wealth

Dallas Fed: Top 10 Wall Street Banks Own More Than 50% Of US GDP

March 24, 2012

Alexander Higgins - The Dallas Federal Reserve blasts too big to fail as a perversion of capitalism, outlining how Wall Street bailouts resulted in an unprecedented concentration of wealth.

The Dallas Federal Reserve has just released its damaging annual report titled “Choosing the Road to Prosperity – Why We Must End Too Big to Fail—Now” which reads much like a manifesto of the Occupy Wall Street movement.

The report holds no punches in pointing out the concentration of wealth that has been amassed in nation’s top Wall Street Banks following the bank bailouts and directly calls out too big to fail as a perversion of capitalism.

If it wasn’t for the pro-federal reserve talking points in the annual report, you could replace the title on the report with “Why We Occupy” and use it as a handout for the Occupy movement.

In any case, the Dallas Federal Reserve’s annual report hammers home the case of why the “Too Big To Fail” Wall Street banks need to be broken up to restore a more balanced approach to economic equality in the United States.

$787-billion Bailout Was Really $11.6 Trillion — All Secured by American Taxpayers

Obama and the Financial Criminals

December 15, 2011

American Thinker - At least CBS's 60 Minutes is on to the national fury at the fact that the criminals who brought down the American economy have not been identified personally and brought before the bar of justice. But a week after a broadcast that bored in on the issue, interviewer Steve Croft let Barack Obama off the hook when the president disingenuously stated that the financial shenanigans by Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and banking firms were legal -- that his administration was instrumental in passing new regulations encompassed in the Dodd-Frank legislation to prevent it happening again.

Wait a minute. It is now known that Fannie and Freddie, the government-connected mortgage-packaging giants, threw out the qualifications to allow home-ownership for all, an idealistic social goal pushed by Democrats -- from Jimmy Carter via the Community Reinvestment Act of 1977 to Bill Clinton in the 1990s, who enlisted ACORN to badger banks to make bad loans to minorities, and then to Rep. Barney Frank and his fellow travelers in the 2000s, who put the full weight of the Congress behind the creation of bad mortgage loans.

The large investment and commercial banks saw an opportunity and concocted securities backed by dicey "sub-prime" loans, in which borrowers paid higher interest based on questionable credit. These mortgage-backed instruments were a hot item, yet when the banks learned that the underlying values had vanished, they lent money to mortgage origination firms to gin up even more bad loans at higher and higher interest rates to shape into even more mortgage-backed securities to sell to their customers -- and each other.

Right there criminal fraud is manifest, contradicting Obama's claim that the scam was legal. But there was more. The banks, knowing that the instruments were worthless when they sold them to their own clients, purposefully bought "insurance" (credit default swaps) against their own products, thus doubly swindling their customers. And they made millions doing it -- first on the commissions from the sale, and then from their short position as the securities tanked. In 2008, the house of cards came tumbling down, taking with it the American economy.

Then enters Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson, formerly chief of Goldman Sachs -- the ubiquitous investment banking firm that has left fingerprints all over the meltdown -- who insisted that we must save the hides of the big banks (his compatriots) with the stimulus bailout to "rescue the financial system." Originally stated to be $787 billion, the total, according to Bloomberg research, reached $11.6 trillion -- all secured by American taxpayers. The result was the near-destruction of the consumer sector, which represents 80% of the economy, all to save the criminals who committed the illegal acts that brought down the economy.

But worse, commercial and community banks are still burdened with bad real estate loans and investments. Consequently, they are under orders from banking regulators not to lend, which further exacerbates the decimation of the middle class and small business owners who cannot find loans to recover and grow. The stimulus should have been distributed -- via tax breaks and rebates -- to households to stimulate consumer spending, which in turn would have stabilized the small business sector that could have kept workers and hired for new positions.

Thus, Obama's claim on 60 Minutes that Paulson's policies averted another Great Depression is ominously premature. Big-bank economists and government policy wonks do not understand the U.S. economy -- that all new jobs are created by the small business sector. After three years of pain and suffering, someone saw the light, and Obama set out in 2011 to claim that he is now pushing small business recovery to create jobs. Yet his approach widely misses the mark by proposing federal money to create bogus "green energy" firms (like Solyndra) or the pitiful and outdated plan to rebuild the nation's infrastructure and dump billions into high-speed rail transit.

Obama and his cohorts -- like Paulson, now replaced at Treasury by Timothy Geithner, another investment-bank rent boy -- have not only failed in their approach to the recession, but they may be the architects of an economic calamity more painful than the Great Depression when all is said and done. The European Union debt crisis is just one of the continuing manifestations of the global economic crisis set off by the American financial scandal. Add in the inability of real estate values in the U.S. to recover, and unemployment figures that boggle the mind, and the worst is yet to come.

But the central question Steve Croft asked Obama must be addressed before Americans can begin to regain hope for the future: what is being done to expose and prosecute the criminals who caused the economic collapse? The Securities and Exchange Commission has tried to wipe the shame from its face by investigating some of the sleazy practices, but this comes well after the fox has left the coop with all the eggs. And indeed, fines have been levied against some of the best-known bank brands in the world: JP Morgan Chase, CitiGroup, Morgan Stanley, Bank of America, and others to come. But the fines are paltry, the banks are not required to admit guilt, and the individual culprits are not identified.

It turns out that the SEC cannot bring criminal charges under its charter, and Congress has refused to haul the perpetrators in front of an investigative committee. Obama dodged and weaved and said to 60 Minutes that it is not up to him to punish the culprits. Instead, he threw the ball back into Attorney General Eric Holder's lap, who has yet to bring a single charge against the conspirators.

Why are these two and Congress avoiding the justice Americans demand? Are they under the influence of the mandarins at the Federal Reserve, the Treasury, and the New York Fed, who regulate the big New York banks? Do they believe that criminal prosecution or congressional hearings will divulge even more nefarious behavior that could shake financial markers even more? Are they taking hush money, or fearful of losing campaign contributions? The U.S. may be a polyglot nation today, but even newcomers understand the national belief that justice must be done.

Yet Obama refuses to go after the bad guys, to stand up for the people against the crooks on Wall Street, who walked away with all our money derived from a gigantic criminal conspiracy. Patting reporter Steve Croft on the knee, and purring that Croft and the public just don't understand, Obama is lending credence to the fear that he is a liar with an agenda, hell-bent on a new world order emphasizing big government and the demise of the middle class and small business -- the bourgeoisie, as Lenin called it.

Obama got away with another question by Steve Croft, who asked about the president's role in the divisiveness in Congress and across the political spectrum. Obama once again took on an avuncular visage and said that the ill will was caused by special interests and the Republican refusal to budge on new taxes -- mentioning Grover Norquist, author of the "no new taxes" pledge taken by a clique of Republican congressmen.

But our wily and mendacious president failed to mention his role in dividing the country by introducing his health care plan when citizens were reeling from the first throes of the financial meltdown. Indeed, it was the president and a Democrat-controlled Congress who split the country with ObamaCare, a far-reaching and frighteningly expensive overhaul that challenges core constitutional and free-market values held strongly by most Americans. And it was Obama who added to the disharmony on spending cuts and the budget by failing to acknowledge the findings of the debt reduction commission he created, co-chaired by Erskine Bowles and Alan Simpson. As an old friend once said of a cheater, "he bears watching."

But the Republicans in Congress are not helping by continuing to refuse to take initiative on spending, except to stonewall any compromise. Compounding the danger that Obama could win again in 2012 is the manic contest for the Republican presidential nomination that is exposing each candidate to merciless attacks by his or her own brothers and sisters. The voting public watches with distress as the office-seekers fall, taking with them another slice of credibility for the GOP. Frontrunners Rick Perry and Herman Cain have fallen, leaving space for Newt Gingrich to challenge Mitt Romney, the one candidate who can beat Obama. With congressional Republicans in gridlock and the presidential primary candidates committed to a suicide pact, the unopposed Obama is avoiding the harsh light of scrutiny when it is needed the most. Hang onto your hat if he wins again.

Obama's Remark to Russian President Caught on Live Microphone

President Obama Asks Medvedev for 'Space' on Missile Defense - 'After My Election I Have More Flexibility'

ABC News - At the tail end of his 90 minute meeting with Russian President Dmitri Medvedev Monday, President Obama said that he would have "more flexibility" to deal with controversial issues such as missile defense, but incoming Russian President Vladimir Putin needs to give him "space."

The exchange was picked up by microphones as reporters were let into the room for remarks by the two leaders.

The exchange:

President Obama: On all these issues, but particularly missile defense, this, this can be solved but it's important for him to give me space.

President Medvedev: Yeah, I understand. I understand your message about space. Space for you…

President Obama: This is my last election. After my election I have more flexibility.

President Medvedev: I understand. I will transmit this information to Vladimir.

When asked to explain what President Obama meant, deputy national security adviser for strategic communications Ben Rhodes told ABC News that there is room for the U.S. and Russia to reach an accommodation, but

"There is a lot of rhetoric around this issue - there always is - in both countries.

A senior administration official tells ABC News:

"This is a political year in which the Russians just had an election, we're about to have a presidential and congressional elections - this is not the kind of year in which we're going to resolve incredibly complicated issue like this. So there's an advantage to pulling back and letting the technical experts work on this as the president has been saying."

U.S. Gasoline Hits $3.93 a Gallon; Drivers in Chicago Paid the Most at $4.56 a Gallon

U.S. Gasoline Hits $3.93 a Gallon: Survey

March 25, 2012

Reuters - The price of a gallon of gasoline in the United States rose 11.49 cents over the past two weeks as profit margins for refiners and gasoline retailers increased, according to the nationwide Lundberg Survey.

The national average for a gallon of regular gasoline rose to $3.9297 on March 23, the survey of about 2,500 gasoline retailers in the continental United States found.

That was a smaller increase than the 12.31-cent rise in the previous survey, which covered the two weeks that ended March 9.

"Profit margins have been exceptionally narrow for quite some time and they have normalized," survey editor Trilby Lundberg told Reuters. "Crude oil price hikes have found their way through to the pump."

The benchmark West Texas Intermediate crude oil closed on Friday at 106.87, down slightly from the March 9 price of $107.40 a barrel.

Lundberg added it was difficult to predict which way gasoline prices would go, but said it would likely take another crude price increase to see a jump in costs at the pump, because the United States is currently sitting on a large cushion of excess refining capacity.

"If crude prices rise, gas will follow," Lundberg said, adding that assurances from Saudi Arabia in the last week that it would boost output to meet any shortfall in supply, may have calmed nervous investors. "If crude prices do not jump, gas prices will peak soon, if they are not already peaking."

Gas demand may finally be on the increase in the United States due to daylight savings time, which began on March 11, she added. With the extension of daylight hours removing the impediment of darkness for drivers, demand is somewhat more robust Lundberg said.

Among cities covered by the survey, the lowest average price was in Tulsa, Oklahoma, at $3.58 per gallon. Drivers in Chicago paid the most at $4.56 a gallon.

7.2 Earthquake Strikes Chile Near the Same Central Region Hit by a Massive 8.8 Magnitude Earthquake in 2010

Magnitude 7.2 Quake Hits Central Chile

March 25, 2012

Reuters - A magnitude 7.2 earthquake hit central Chile on Sunday, shaking buildings in the capital of Santiago, but there were no immediate reports of serious damage or injuries.

The government emergency agency, ONEMI, said it was preventively evacuating some areas of the coast, but quickly revoked that decision.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake struck 64 miles west north west of the town of Talca at a depth of 6.2 miles.

Magnitude 7.0 earthquakes or greater are capable of causing widespread, heavy damage and causing tsunamis at sea, but ONEMI said this quake was not expected to generate a tsunami off the coast.

The quake struck near the same central region that was hit by a massive 8.8 magnitude earthquake in 2010 and ensued tsunamis in 2010 that killed about 500 people.

The central area is home to some important copper mines, but the bulk of output in the world's top copper exporting nation is concentrated in the far northern region.

Chilean state copper giant Codelco said operations were normal at its Andina and El Teniente copper mines after the quake. Codelco spokesman Pablo Orozco told Reuters there had been no energy blackouts at the key mines.

New Science Contradicts Man-made Global Warming Theory

Medieval Warming WAS Global – New Science Contradicts IPCC

'It was consensual' claims looking shaky

March 23, 2012

The Register - More peer-reviewed science contradicting the warming-alarmist "scientific consensus" was announced yesterday, as a new study shows that the well-documented warm period which took place in medieval times was not limited to Europe, or the northern hemisphere: it reached all the way to Antarctica.

The research involved the development of a new means of assessing past temperatures, to add to existing methods such as tree ring analysis and ice cores. In this study, scientists analysed samples of a crystal called ikaite, which forms in cold waters.

“Ikaite is an icy version of limestone,” explains earth-sciences prof Zunli Lu. “The crystals are only stable under cold conditions and actually melt at room temperature.”

Down in the Antarctic peninsula that isn't a problem, and Lu and his colleagues were able to take samples which had been present for hundreds of years and date their formation. The structure of Ikaite, it turns out, varies measurably depending on the temperature when it forms, allowing boffins to construct an accurate past temperature record.

A proper temperature record for Antarctica is particularly interesting, as it illuminates one of the main debates in global-warming/climate-change: namely, were the so-called Medieval Warm Period and Little Ice Age merely regional, or were they global events? The medieval warmup experienced by northern Europeans from say 900AD to 1250AD seems to have been at least as hot as anything seen in the industrial era. If it was worldwide in extent that would strongly suggest that global warming may just be something that happens from time to time, not something caused by miniscule concentrations of CO2 (the atmosphere is 0.04 per cent CO2 right now; this figure might climb to 0.07 per cent in the medium term).

The oft-mentioned "scientific consensus", based in large part on the work of famous climate-alarmist scientists Michael Mann and Phil Jones and reflected in the statements of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), says that isn't true. The IPCC consensus is that the medieval warming – and the "Little Ice Age" which followed it – only happened in Europe and maybe some other northern areas. They were local events only, and globally the world was cooler than it is now. The temperature increase seen in the latter half of the 20th century is a new thing caused by humanity's carbon emissions.

Lu and his colleagues' new work, however, indicates that in fact the medieval warm period and little ice age were both felt right down to Antarctica.

“We showed that the Northern European climate events influenced climate conditions in Antarctica,” says the prof, who was at Oxford when most of the work was done but now has a position at Syracuse uni in the States.
He and his colleagues write:

This ikaite record qualitatively supports that both the Medieval Warm Period and Little Ice Age extended to the Antarctic Peninsula.

In other words, global warming has already occurred in historical, pre-industrial times, and then gone away again.

America Cities Outlaw Smoking in Apartments and Parks; Home Owners Associations Ban Smoking in Homes; Colleges Ban Smoking on Campus and Even in Cars

Bloomberg Wants Apartment Smoking Ban in NYC? New Law Hhas Clues

April 18, 2012

The Upshot - New York City residents who are still smokers are an unloved bunch in the Big Apple. Mayor Michael Bloomberg has made it his mission to ban cigarettes from public places, including restaurants, bars, parks, beaches, and even Times Square. And if hizzoner has his way, apartments will be his next smoke-free target.

To be clear, the rule introduced to the City Council doesn't ban smoking in residential buildings, it would simply require that housing have written rules.

According to the Wall Street Journal,

"Bloomberg is proposing new legislation that would require residential buildings to develop written policies that address whether smoking is permitted in both indoor and outdoor locations, including lobbies, balconies, courtyards, laundry rooms and, most controversially, individual apartments. The goal is to alert prospective tenants and owners considering moving into a building about the rules governing smoking."

Of course, New Yorkers know the bigger worry from fellow smoking residents isn't second-hand smoke — it's a fire in the building.

Bloomberg gave his assurance in a press conference that he has no intention of an outright ban, saying,

"We're not trying to ban anything. I've always believed, as you know, that if you want to smoke I think you should have a right to do so. But it kills you."

The mayor certainly puts his money where his beliefs are. He has spent $600 million of his own fortune to end smoking around the globe.

Some Apartments Bar Residents from Smoking at Home

November 22, 2010

AP - No Smoking signs are popping up at some apartment complexes and condos, barring people from lighting up even in their own homes.

And in places where smoking is permitted, tenants and owners are beginning to seek protection from the secondhand smoke they say is seeping into their apartments.
“A lot of the demand is just coming from people realizing that smoke doesn’t stay in one unit,” said Rita Turner, deputy director of the Center for Tobacco Regulation, Litigation and Advocacy at the University of Maryland Law School. “Buildings are designed to breathe.”
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say secondhand smoke can cause asthma, respiratory and ear infections, sudden infant death syndrome, heart disease and lung cancer.
“There is no risk-free level of exposure to secondhand smoke,” the agency says on its website.
Such concerns have led to efforts to ban smoking not only in common spaces of buildings, but also in individual apartments.

The Department of Housing and Urban Development issued a notice last year encouraging public housing authorities to consider smoke-free policies, and many have, officials said. Some private developers also are doing so.

The Alaire, which is in Rockville, Md., lists among its “green” features a saline swimming pool without chlorine chemicals, a solar-powered trash compactor, the use of recycled soda bottles on its roof for plants — and a smoking ban.
“Without a doubt, this has driven far more residents to us than it has detracted,” said Matt Blocher, senior vice president of marketing for the JBG Companies, which own the complex.

Nanny State on Steroids: City Plans to Outlaw Smoking in Apartments

March 25, 2012

Infowars.com - Few argue that smoking is bad for you. However, in Elk Grove, outside of Sacramento, California, government bureaucrats are ready to exploit this fact in order to outlaw people from smoking in their homes.

The Elk Grove city council will take up the ban this week, according to CBS Sacramento. The ordinance would outlaw smoking in all apartments in the city.

CBS quotes people who favor the unwarranted expansion of state power over the individual.

“I think it’s a pretty good idea,” one apartment resident told the television station. “I think it’s harmful to the human body and especially to younger kids who live here,” said another.

CBS notes that the law is uncalled for because “hundreds of apartment complexes in Elk Grove are already smoke-free. Property owners – many argue – have made the move without government intervention.”

The decisions of property owners are irrelevant to the state, though. It will impose myriad laws at gunpoint – no matter how pointless or destructive (consider drug laws) – because that is what government does.

Out of control government invariably runs roughshod over the rights of the individual and property owners. It has done so for so long and with such impunity that many people now think government regulation of human behavior is a good thing.

For Condo Associations, Smoking Ban Hits Home

October 01, 2010

Chicago Tribune - As smoking restrictions become increasingly widespread, smokers find the last place they can indulge freely is at home. Perhaps not for long if that home is a condominium. Associations are passing their own bans, and some include living units as well as common areas.

In Chicago, the 1418 N. Lake Shore Drive Condominium Association recently amended its declaration to prohibit smoking in interior common elements, interior limited common elements and inside the units. Smoking is permitted in a unit, however, if it is restricted to a single room that has been equipped with an association-approved, self-contained air-treatment system that contains the smoke.

Court Upholds HOA Rule Against Smoking in Own Home

Outside the Beltway - A Colorado judge has upheld a rule by a homeowners association preventing people from smoking in their own home.

A judge has upheld a homeowners association’s order barring a couple from smoking in the town house they own.

Colleen and Rodger Sauve, both smokers, filed a lawsuit in March after their condominium association amended its bylaws last December to prohibit smoking. “We argued that the HOA was not being reasonable in restricting smoking in our own unit, nowhere on the premises, not in the parking lot or on our patio,” Colleen Sauve said.

The Heritage Hills #1 Condominium Owners Association was responding to complaints from the Sauves’ neighbors who said cigarette smoke was seeping into their units, representing a nuisance to others in the building.

In a Nov. 7 ruling, Jefferson County District Judge Lily Oeffler ruled the association can keep the couple from smoking in their own home. Oeffler stated “smoke and/or smoke smell” is not contained to one area and that smoke smell “constitutes a nuisance.” She noted that under condo declarations, nuisances are not allowed.

While this would seem beyond the reasonable scope of power of an HOA, especially when imposed post hoc on those who bought their homes without any way of knowing this restriction would be put in place, my knowledge of the applicable real estate law is minimal. And I’d be mad, too, if I could smell my neighbor’s cigarette smoke in my own home.

The solution, however, is a head scratcher:

The couple now has to light up on the street in front of their condominium building. “I think it’s ridiculous. If there’s another blizzard, I’m going to be having to stand out on the street, smoking a cigarette,” said Colleen Suave.

So, the neighbors are afraid of smoke coming through the walls but are fine with it in the open? How does that make sense?

Frederick, Maryland, Bans Smoking in Select Areas of City Parks

Lighting up to carry $25 fine; ban enforced during hours park is open and at park events

March 16, 2012

Frederick Gazette - Smokers in Frederick have fewer places where they will be permitted to light up following a law approved Thursday that bans smoking in some areas of city parks.

The Board of Aldermen voted unanimously to ban smoking within 10 feet of a playground, at the Carroll Creek Linear Park ampitheater during events, in the fixed seating adjacent to the Baker Park Bandshell and in the seating area adjacent to McCurdy Field. The ban, which takes effect immediately, carries a $25 fine.Alderman Karen Young (D) said the ban will protect children and others from second-hand smoke.

“We have an obligation to lean towards protecting those who can't protect themselves,” Young said. “... We realized we should target our efforts to where children were going to congregate in parks, and where individuals were going to congregate. I think it's a very reasonable compromise. I support it and I hope that those who feel their rights are infringed upon understand the difficult position and tradeoff.”

Alderman Kelly Russell (D) said questions still remain over enforcement.

Joleen Hart, the city's volunteer parks enforcement agent, can issue citations and will monitor the ban. Hart has said her goal is to ensure people follow the law if it is enacted — rather than issue citations.

Outside of event hours, the ban follows the hours the park is open. Roelkey Myers, the director of parks and recreation, said the majority of the complaints about smoking in parks came from Friends of Hospital Park. Frederick Memorial Hospital staff and visitors are frequently seen using the nearby park to smoke because the hospital's campus is smoke-free.

Florida Colleges Ban Smoking, Even in Your Car

January 7, 2012

Palm Beach Post - If you smoke, you may be breathing less easily on college campuses these days.

Looking for the designated smoking area at Florida International University? There is none.

Want to light a cigarette inside your car at the University of Florida? Don't let the cops see you.

Hoping to smoke during your break at Nova Southeastern University? You have six months left until NSU becomes the latest college to go tobacco-free. Come July 1, the covered smoking benches will come down and smoke-free-campus signs will go up.

"Although we'd like people to quit, we're not saying you have to. You just can't smoke here," said Tom Vitucci, NSU's director of campus recreation and leader of the smoke-free effort.

College campuses are becoming less tolerant of smokers, replacing tobacco restrictions with outright bans, even while in your car. Violators face discipline ranging from warnings to expulsion or termination in extreme cases. Most will just be told to extingish their cigarettes, Nova officials said.

Many people welcome the policies, saying they promote health and protect non-smokers. Others see them as overreaching and discriminatory.

"I understand that some people on campus don't like smoke, but they go to clubs and don't seem to have an issue with it," said NSU junior Carin Pool, 30, of Plantation, who was smoking on campus Friday. "It seems a little bit like they're picking on smokers."

Since announcing the forthcoming tobacco ban in November, NSU has been sending notices through email and its Facebook page, offering smoking cessation classes to students and employees.

About 75 percent of students and employees who responded to an NSU survey supported the change, Vitucci said. About 9 percent identified themselves as smokers, he said.

Max Scheiner, 20, of Plantation, is a non-smoker who supports the policy.

"It will mean cleaner air for everyone," he said.

But critics said these policies go beyond the initial intent of protecting people from second-hand smoke

"If you're in your car, you're not even talking about second-hand smoke. You're not affecting anyone else," said George Koodray, assistant director of the Citizens Freedom Alliance, a group that advocates smokers' rights. "This is about trying to stop someone from doing something you don't approve of even when it's legal."

Vitucci said it would send the wrong message if vehicles were excluded from the smoke-free policy.

"We don't want your car to be a safe haven, where you do any activity you want as long as you're in your car," he said.

There are now at least 639 smoke-free campuses in the United States, up from about 400 a year ago, according to the American Nonsmokers Rights Association. There are at least 13 in Florida, including UF, FIU, Miami-Dade College and the University of Central Florida.

More will likely follow suit. Florida Atlantic University restricts smoking to designated spots and plans to discuss possibly going smoke-free in about six months, said Tom Donaudy, FAU's vice president of facilities.

"We think we're doing the right thing by giving consideration to folks who might have been long-term smokers," Donaudy said. " It's a terrible habit to kick, so we want to give them heads-up before we go that way."

James St. Louis, a marketing assistant in NSU's undergraduate admissions office, said he didn't know whether the tobacco ban would cause him to quit. He's tried several times.

"I'll probably be going out to lunch a lot more," he said.

71-year Old Dick Cheney Receives Heart Transplant; the Cut Off Age for Transplants is 65 for Most Hospitals

Dick Cheney Recovering from Heart Transplant Surgery

Video here: http://gma.yahoo.com/blogs/abc-blogs/dick-cheney-recovering-from-heart-transplant-surgery.html

March 25, 2012

ABC News Blogs - Former Vice President Dick Cheney is recovering after undergoing heart transplant surgery at Falls Church, Va., today, according to a statement released by Cheney’s office.

Cheney has been on the cardiac transplant list for more than 20 months.

“Although the former Vice President and his family do not know the identity of the donor, they will be forever grateful for this lifesaving gift. Former Vice President Cheney is thankful to the teams of doctors and other medical professionals at Inova Fairfax and George Washington University Hospital for their continued outstanding care,” the statement said.

Mitt Romney tweeted,

“Ann and I send our thoughts and prayers to Vice President Cheney for a fast and full recovery.”

Cheney has had five heart attacks, the first of which was in 1978 when he was 37 years old, and the fourth in November 2000, after he and former President George W. Bush were elected to the White House.

In 2001, Cheney had a pacemaker installed into his chest, and in September 2009, he underwent elective back surgery to treat lumbar spinal stenosis.

Cheney’s fifth and most recent heart attack was in February 2010.The heart attack and subsequent two-day hospital stay forced the former vice president to miss a breakfast with his former boss, George W. Bush, and hundreds of former White House and campaign staffers. The event, sponsored by the Bush-Cheney Alumni Association, was to be the first time the two met in person since they left office in January 2009.

Instead, Bush dropped by to visit Cheney at his home in Virginia on Feb. 25. Cheney and Bush, both sporting dark suits, shook hands and exchanged grins on the steps of Cheney’s residence in McLean, Va., before turning to wave to the ABC News camera.

“Mr. President, welcome,” began Cheney.

“Lookin’ good,” said Bush again.

“Could be worse,” the often dry-witted Cheney said.

Cheney underwent surgery in July 2010 to have a heart pump, called a Left Ventricular Assist Device [LVAD], implanted to treat his recurring heart disease.

The LVAD is implanted next to the heart to help its main pumping chamber, the left ventricle, pump blood through the body. Such devices are used mainly for short periods, to buy time for potential transplant candidates as they await a donor organ.

Cardiologists said then that in Cheney’s case, the pump was likely a “bridge” that would keep him alive until he could receive a heart transplant. Many cardiac experts said at the time of his surgery that Cheney may be only one step away from a transplant but could find himself on a wait list for “months or years.”

Cheney served as Secretary of Defense under George H.W. Bush.

New CCTV Cameras will Allow Governments to Find Anyone Instantly Simply Using a Passport Photo or Facebook Profile

Big Brother Just Got Scarier: Japanese CCTV Camera Can Scan 36 Million Faces per Second - and Recognise Anyone Who Has Walked into Its Gaze

  • Biometric camera stores details of everyone who walks past it
  • Stores 'library' of face info
  • Can scan through 36 million faces per second searching for people
  • Will be on sale to governments within next year
March 23, 2012

Daily Mail - A new camera technology from Hitachi Hokusai Electric can scan days of camera footage instantly, and find any face which has EVER walked past it.

Its makers boast that it can scan 36 million faces per second.

The technology raises the spectre of governments - or other organisations - being able to 'find' anyone instantly simply using a passport photo or a Facebook profile.

The 'trick' is that the camera 'processes' faces as it records, so that all faces which pass in front of it are recorded and stored instantly.

Faces are stored as a searchable 'biometric' record, storing the unique

When the police - or anyone else - want to search for a particular individual, they're searching through a gallery of pre-indexed faces, rather than a messy library of footage.
'We think this system is suitable for customers that have a relatively large-scale surveillance system, such as railways, power companies, law enforcement, and large stores,' says the company.
The company aims to make the system available within the next tax year, according to a report in DigInfo.

The system does have limitations - it can only scan faces within a certain field of view in front of the camera, and faces have to be at least 40x40 pixels in size to be indexed by the system.

Goodbye, Anonymity: Latest Surveillance Tech can Search Up to 36 Million Faces per Second

March 25, 2012

Digital Trends - Welcome to the next generation in surveillance technology. A Japanese company, Hitachi Kokusai Electric, has unveiled a novel surveillance camera that is able to capture a face and search up to 36 million faces in one second for a similar match in its database.

While the same task would typically require manually sifting through hours upon hours of recordings, the company´s new technology searches algorithmically for a facial match. It enables any organization, from a retail outlet to the government, to monitor and identify pedestrians or customers from a database of faces.

Hitachi’s software is able to recognize a face with up to 30 degrees of deviation turned vertically and horizontally away from the camera, and requires faces to fill at least 40 pixels by 40 pixels for accurate recognition. Any image, whether captured on a mobile phone, handheld camera, or a video still, can be uploaded and searched against its database for matches.

“This high speed is achieved by detecting faces through image recognition when the footage from the camera is recorded, and also by grouping similar faces,” Seiichi Hirai, Hitachi Kokusai Electric researcher told DigInfo TV.

If a department store shoplifter is caught on camera, the suspected individual’s image can be isolated and Hitachi’s software will sift through its database to look for prior visits to that store. From there, it can generate clips of all the other footage the suspect appears in. These could allow authorities or shop owners to peruse the suspect’s actions before and during the incident, potentially generating more clues that could identify him or her.

“We think this system is suitable for customers that have a relatively large-scale surveillance system, such as railways, power companies, law enforcement, and large stores,” Hirai added.

While the system could obviously prevent or catch suspicious activity; we can think of a couple of uses outside of its immediate purpose. For instance, the system could be employed as a tool to find lost children within crowded events, like concerts or in amusement parks. Other uses might be more contentious. An upgraded iteration of the system could enable corporations or governmental organizations to track down individuals who owe unpaid fines. That may be an extreme hypothetical, but the technology would make it possible. Now it´s up to legislators and regulators to decide how far is too far.

Hitachi Kokusai Electric´s surveillance camera system will launch in the next fiscal year.

Israel Committed to Attacking Iran in June 2012

Israel Committed to Attacking Iran in June

March 24, 2012

Infowars.com - In an exclusive report, Jerusalem-based DEBKAfile reports that both Israel and the United States are on the same page in regard to launching an attack on Iran.

“American and Israeli intelligence evaluations of the state of Iran’s program are in accord – contrary to the impression gained from Obama administration officials,” DEBKA-Net-Weekly reported on March 22. “Both are of one mind on the imperative to paralyze that program even by force if Iran refuses to give up its pursuit of a nuclear weapon.”

On Friday, it was reported that the United States, European allies and Israel agree that Iran does not have a nuclear weapons program.

“Tehran does not have a bomb, has not decided to build one, and is probably years away from having a deliverable nuclear warhead,” the National Post reported.
Despite this evidence, the Israeli government has decided to attack Iran.

According to DEBKAfile, Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak said in a radio interview on Thursday that if Israel is resolved to attack Iran, it will have to do so within three months. In February, it was reported that Israel would carry out an attack in June and would use Saudi Arabia as its base.

DEBKAfile claims Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu has convinced a majority of his Security and Diplomatic Cabinet of the urgency of an attack.

“He is now backed by the two deputy prime ministers, the defense, foreign affairs, interior and finance ministers, while Intelligence Minister Dan Meridor and Minister without Portfolio Benny Begin are unconvinced. Netanyahu can therefore go ahead and safely put the military option to the vote in the cabinet for the first time,” DEBKAfile reports.

With this consensus, Barak sent IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Benny Gantz to Washington to meet Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Gen. Martin E. Dempsey. Gantz told Dempsey Israel would “be happy if the US halts Iran’s nuclear program in its tracks, no matter whether this is done by economic sanctions, an oil embargo, negotiations between Tehran and the world powers, or secret US-Iranian diplomacy.” The effort, however, would need to fit within the three month timeline.

Israeli officials then met “discretely” with leading members of Congress and told them about the three month timeline.

DEBKAfile states, however, that Israel “may have to part ways with the United States on the Iranian issue the first time in its short history” and attack Iran “before it is too late.”

Israel is now committed to an attack on Iran that will occur during the height of campaigning for the 2012 U.S. presidential election. The Republican national convention will be held on August 27-30 in Tampa, Florida, and the Democrat convention will be held on September 3-6 in Charlotte, North Carolina. If Israel attacks Iran in June, it will undoubtedly be the dominant issue during the convention and the election in November.

Republican candidates Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich have all expressed their support of an Israeli attack on Iran. Ron Paul is the only candidate who opposes an attack. A poll conducted earlier this month revealed that a majority of Republicans believe the U.S. will attack Iran this year.

Obama said on March 5 that the U.S. would always “have Israel’s back” but said there was still time for diplomacy.
