Recent Graduates Eye Health IT Jobs as Top Employment Option

May 20, 2010

iHealthBeat.org - Health IT-related professions rank first among the 14 top career choices for recent and mid-career college graduates, according to a study released recently by the University of California-San Diego Extension, Healthcare IT News reports (Merrill, Healthcare IT News, 5/19).

The results were based on enrollment figures, U.S. employment statistics and interviews with business executives (Shroder, San Diego Union-Tribune, 5/19).

The report notes that the federal government's recent efforts to promote health IT have helped fuel interest in the field by creating a greater demand for employees who can work with electronic health records and protect patient data.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook, medical record and health IT technicians accounted for about 172,500 jobs in 2008. The number is expected to rise by at least 20% over the coming years, according to the handbook.

Specific job opportunities within the health IT field include:

Health care integration engineer;
Health care systems analyst;
Clinical IT consultant; and
Technology support specialist.
