DHS Purchases 1.6 Billion Bullets to Use Domestically (Video)

Congressmen Demand DHS Explain 1.6 Billion Bullets Purchase (Click Link to Play Video)

March 31, 2013

Mr. Conservative - Over a period of a few months, the Department of Homeland Security (“DHS”) has engaged in an epic shopping trip, buying thousands of guns and tanks, and buying billions of bullets – enough to fight in Iraq and Afghanistan for decades. Of course, since this is the DHS, these purchases aren’t for our armed forces. They are for government agencies that are responsible for keeping us safe at home – and many have noticed that the buying binge seems excessive for that purpose.

Congress is finally starting to pay attention to the DHS’s shopaholic spending. Congressman Leonard Lance (R.-NJ) has now demanded that DHS head Janet Napolitano explain what’s going on with these over-the-top purchases.

In response to a question from a journalist (see video at this link) about the DHS’s weapon purchases, Rep. Lance made the following statement:
Lance: I think Congress should ask the Department [of Homeland Security] about both of those issues and I would like a full explanation as to why that has been done. I have every confidence that the Oversight Committee, or perhaps the Intelligence Committee, but I would imagine the Oversight Committee, should ask those questions. And I do not have an answer as to why they did what they did, but I certainly share a believe that Congress has a responsibility to ask Secretary Napolitano as to exactly why these purchases have occurred.
Reporter: How concerned are you about this?
Lance: I am concerned, and I think that we have to make sure we continue to live in a country based on freedom, a country based on individual rights, and I hope that we in Congress get the answers to these questions.
Rep. Lance is only one of several Congressman getting concerned about the DHS’s shopping list.
Congressman Timothy Huelscamp (R.-KS) is also wondering what’s going on.

In an interview with FreedomOutpost.com, Huelscamp expressed his inability to understand the reasons behind the DHS purchases:
They have no answer for the question. They refuse to answer that. I’ve got a list of questions of various agencies about multiple things. Far from being the most transparent administration in the world, they are the most closed natured, opaque and they refuse to let us know what’s going on there. So I don’t have answers for that.
Multiple members of Congress are asking those questions.

When it comes down to it, during the budget process, during the appropriations process, are we willing to hold DHS’ feet to the fire? We’re going to find out if we get an answer. I say we don’t fund them till we get an answer.
Even Forbes Magazine, which isn’t known for conspiracy theories, has published articles asking what the heck is going on under Napolitano’s watch:
It is utterly inconceivable that Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano is planning a coup d’etat against President Obama, and the Congress, to install herself as Supreme Ruler of the United States of America. There, however, are real signs that the Department bureaucrats are running amok. About 20 years ago this columnist worked, for two years, in the U.S. Department of Energy’s general counsel’s office in its procurement and finance division. And is wise to the ways. The answer to “why would DHS need such a vehicle?” almost certainly is this: it’s a cool toy and these (reportedly) million dollar toys are being recycled, without much of a impact on the DHS budget. So… why not?
Out of control bureaucrats? A war against conservative groups? Or just fun with other people’s money? Whatever is going on, at a time when the government is going broke and private citizens are having to complete with the DHS to purchase guns and bullets, something wrong is happening in Washington.
