U.S. Deploys Military Boots on the Ground in Syria

According to Russian news agencies, Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said that Moscow considers the use of U.S. forces without coordination with Syrian President Bashar Assad's government unacceptable. Earlier, U.S. officials disclosed plans to station dozens of special forces troops as advisers in Syria to help in the fight against Islamic State militants. "I am sure that neither the United States nor Russia want (the conflict) to become a so-called proxy war," Lavrov told reporters after multi-lateral talks on the Syrian crisis in Vienna. "But it is obvious for me that the situation makes the task of cooperation between the militaries more relevant." He also said discussions on securing a ceasefire in Syria's four-year civil war would continue, but said the fight against what he called terrorist groups would also not cease. [Reuters]

The United States' decision to send troops into Syria is an act of aggression because it does not have the government's agreement, a Syrian member of parliament said Saturday. "When America sends ground forces into Syrian territories without an agreement with the Syrian government it becomes an intervention and aggression," Shehadeh said by telephone. "Will America allow Russian ground forces to go into America without an agreement? I think the answer is no." [Associated Press]

US escalates involvement in Syria amid talks on Assad future

AP - The United States escalated its fight against the Islamic State in Syria on Friday, pledging the first open deployment of military boots on the ground, even as U.S., Russian and other diplomats pressed a new peace effort that America hopes will hasten the departure of Bashar Assad.

Up to 50 special operations troops will be sent to assist Kurdish and Arab forces in northern Syria, American officials said. The move marks a significant departure for President Barack Obama, who for years has resisted putting ground forces in Syria even as he has gradually intensified the U.S. military response to what counterterrorism officials worry is a growing Islamic State threat in Syria and Iraq.

The troop announcement came as diplomats in Vienna representing 17 countries and the European Union agreed to launch a broad new peace attempt to gradually end Syria's long civil war — a declaration that avoided any determination on when President Assad might leave. It is not clear how many rebel groups would agree to a plan that doesn't result in Assad's immediate departure.

Any cease-fire agreement that may come as a result of the peace effort would not include the Islamic State, which controls large parts of northern Syria and has its capital there.

But the participation by Russia and Iran in the attempt could mark a new and promising phase in the diplomacy since those countries have staunchly backed Assad.

The White House has long said that Assad's ouster is essential to its ultimate goal of defeating the Islamic State because the Syrian president's brutal tactics against Sunni rebels have drawn Sunni radicals from all over the world into the militant group's ranks.

Despite killing as many as 12,000 militants, the U.S. bombing campaign has not significantly weakened the Islamic State's capacity to hold territory, and the group's ranks have been replenished by foreign fighters and others.

Military experts say ground troops are essential for the fight. A U.S. program to train Syrians was abandoned as a failure, and the new deployment essentially would replace that program.

Speaking to reporters flying with him on an overseas trip, Defense Secretary Ash Carter said this would probably not be the last significant adjustment to the anti-IS military campaign in Syria and Iraq.

"We are going to continue to innovate, to build up what works," he said.

Friday's developments came as missiles slammed into a crowded suburb of the Syrian capital. The attack killed at least 40 people, activists said. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and the Local Coordination Committees group said government forces fired more than 11 missiles at a market in the suburb of Douma.

In Washington, officials said the new U.S. forces will work from headquarters locations and won't move to the front lines or be used to call in airstrikes. However, the U.S. has conducted special operations raids into Syria before now and will continue to do more unilateral raids. It helped Iraqi forces rescue hostages last week, and Master Sgt. Joshua Wheeler was killed, the first U.S. combat death in that country since 2011.

White House spokesman Josh Earnest said the new troops will not be on a "combat mission."

"There's no denying the serious risk they will be facing," Earnest said, but their mission will "not be to lead the charge to take the hill."

Russia and Syria are conducting airstrikes in the country, but Earnest said it was unlikely the U.S. troops would be at risk because Russia has not bombed in the area where they will be.

On Capitol Hill, some lawmakers greeted the troop announcement with dismay.

It "marks a major shift in U.S. policy — a shift that is occurring without congressional debate (and) is unlikely to succeed in achieving our objective of defeating IS," said Sen. Brian Schatz.

On the other hand, Sen. John McCain, chairman of the Armed Services Committee, said the decision was "another insufficient step in the Obama administration's policy of gradual escalation."

One of the groups the U.S. troops will be working with is a Kurdish militia known as the YPG, which could pose a political problem for the United States.

The YPG was accused of war crimes in a recent report by Amnesty International, which documented allegations that the group forcibly displaced Arabs and Turkmen and burned down villages perceived as cooperating with its opponents. The group has denied the allegations and the State Department says it is looking into them.

Carter declined to be specific about where the U.S. troops will operate in northern Syria but said they will be in territory controlled by Syrian Kurds.

"However, the Kurdish YPG and the Syrian Arab coalition essentially work together to counter ISIL," he said.

In Vienna on Friday, the U.S., Russia and more than a dozen other nations directed the U.N. to start a new diplomatic process between Syria's government and opposition groups with the goal of reaching a nationwide cease-fire and political transition — but without an explicit demand for Assad to quickly leave power.

American officials say the talks marked a significant new phase, one they hope is an endgame for Assad's reign.

At a joint news conference with Russia's top diplomat and the U.N. envoy to Syria, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said the countries — including fierce regional rivals Iran and Saudi Arabia — each pledged to support an independent and secular Syria, to maintain the country's institutions, to protect the rights of all Syrians and to strive to defeat the Islamic State.

Kerry said the U.N.-led process should lead to a new constitution for Syria and internationally supervised elections, as well as an end to violence between Assad's military and Sunni rebel groups so the world community can focus on the fight against the Islamic State.

But no agreement was reached on Assad.

"I did not say that Assad has to go or that Assad has to say," Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said through an interpreter.

This article is misleading and untruthful like all mainstream media articles. The US is trying to assist the rebels to oust Assad. And, who are the rebels fighting to oust Assad: ISIS. ISIS is a US-created and led terrorist organization. We " removed " Saddam and created Al Qaeda and ISIS and total destabilized Iraq and then Afghanistan and now we want to remove Assad and aid " the rebels " many of whom are ISIS and arm them . My question is what happens when our troops, assisting the people fighting Assad's forces, get bombed or confronted by either Russian aircraft/troops or Iranian aircraft/troops, that are working to repel those opposing Assad. For a person who has never wanted to be involved in a war, or escalate tensions, President Obama has just done it. Had he done this 3 years ago or even after the "red-line" remark concerning chemical weapons, it might have worked. Too little too late and this has disaster written all over it. I'm 63, served during Viet Nam and remember how we got knee deep in that one. Started with Advisors. Anyone remember the MACV? MACV means Miltary Advisory Command #5 and at first controlled all the advisers and training personnel that were sent to RVN beginning in the 50s


I know that Truman sent in 16 advisors to Vietnam in 1950. From then on, it escalated, especially after the Gulf of Tonkin incident in 1965. Talk about misinformation - somehow, somebody told Lyndon Johnson that North Vietnam attacked American troops in the Gulf of Tonkin, killing and wounding over 100 troops. Actually NOTHING happened, but that fact wasn't known until decades later. Congress, controlled by Democrats with over 2-1 majorities in both Houses, voted 88-2 and 416-0 in the Senate and House respectively; to essentially give Johnson a "blank check" for military action in Vietnam. Bush II also acted on faulty intelligence that was provided him - his worst mistake was going into Iraq while still engaged in Afghanistan.

our American government has declined Russian's and others invitation to join the legal and legit efforts to fight the ISIS in Syria. Obama has declined the Russia's efforts to create anti-ISIS coalition, but Obama's regime is criticizing Russian air force strikes in Syria and instead of joining Russia we as USA are going to be on the opposite side that fights against the only force (Syrian Army) who currently fights the ISIL effectively. Instead we will create the counter force that may result in catastrophic tragedy and unpredictable results if two sides will clash in accident.

Military "advisors". This sounds really familiar - reminds me of something that went down around fifty years ago, in deep jungles, in another civil war.

Advisors go in, then soldiers and massive amounts of resources go in, then jaded veterans, bodies and wreckage come out.

Methinks the only military advising that will be going on is these 50 or so "special ops" personnel scouting the terrain, distribution of forces of the various factions (Rebels, Assad loyalists, ISIS, Hamas, the two factions of Kurds, etc) and the sociopolitical situation in greater depth before "advising" President Obama on where and when to start deploying the first soldiers.

I'm all for plastering ISIS #$%$ from the air, leaving Assad alone so we don't start hostilities with Russia what with the already high tensions over Ukraine and Crimea, but I sure hope we don't follow the Vietnam War trajectory here.


Russia entered this fight because Putin distains ISIS and wants nothing more than to wipe them off the planet. If all the sudden we are fighting Russia, then do you think (I doubt you do because you are just plain dumb!!!) it might be because the US funded ISIS in the first place?

Now with US forces in Syria, there is a greater risk of hostile contact with Russia with the US in a position of being the bad guy. Why to go liberals. We are that much closer to WWIII.

No amount of "advisors" they send in will assist whoever they are there to "assist" because the locals are incapable and unwilling to do anything but run. Those who could have rallied their countrymen have long since left and found havens in the West. Those that are left are the dregs of their culture and would wind up shooting themselves instead of the enemy. Worse yet, as soon as danger closes in, they will immediately change sides. If we wanted to eradicate ISIS when it would have been simpler to do it, it's way too late now. Now, the only option is a total ground war, with the military totally in charge of the campaign, not the President, and we all know that isn't going to happen. Nope...we will waste lives in Syria and Iraq, and wind up fighting them in our own neighborhoods instead of theirs.

There are numerous problems with Obama sending 50 Special ops troops on an advisory role to the so called "Free Syrian Army." For one, the Free Syrian Army is not a unified group, but a fractured group made up of multiple coalitions and many with Jihadist titles. The CIA released the list of factions they are funding or supporting in Syria to the public and among them are the following names:
1. Mujahideen Army/Army of Holy Warriors (Jaish al-Mujahideen) (remember the mujahadeen of Afghanistan that became Al Qaeda and the Taliban?)

2. Martyrs of Islam Brigade (Liwa’ Shuhadah al-Islam) (this name tells you that the intent is to create an Islamic State)

3.Dawn of Islam Division (Forqat Fajr al-Islam)

4. Supporters of Sunnah Brigade (Liwa’ Ansar al-Sunnah)

5. Partisans of Islam Front (Jabhat Ansar al-Islam)

All of these groups name themselves in support of a cause to create an Islamic State and the "Supporters of Sunnah" name tells you that they are unwilling to work with any other minority groups and only work with Sunni Muslims. In the end, these groups in particular will turn on the West just as the Mujahadeen of Afghanistan did under the direction of Osama Bin Laden.

Another problem with sending 50 troops, is that the goal isn't to just take out ISIS, but to further attack the legitimate government of Assad. If the past 4 years says anything we know that it after arming and tuning the "rebels" it has only allowed for ISIS to spread into Syria and further exacerbate the lack of stability in Syria.

Lastly, Russia will continue to bomb the rebels. How does pose any effect to the 50 American troops in an advisory role? Since Russia is bombing all the rebels and will be undeterred in their efforts, arming them will be pointless as Russia will continue to bomb them. The Free Syrian Observatory has already reported that over 600 rebels have been killed through Russian airstrikes. This includes important commanders and by sending in these 50 troops while Russia is indiscriminately bombing the rebels, that will only put the small group of American forces in harms way as some may potentially be killed. Would that be Obama's fault for putting them in harms way knowing full well that Russia has been bombing the rebels non-stop? Of course, because it isn't a coordinated strategy considering that the rebels are NOT a unified force.

This right here is the crux of the issue. By sending Special Ops forces in an advisory role to a group of forces being decimated by airstrikes, will the U.S. try to blame Russia for any missile strike that may result in American deaths? The U.S. gov't knew that Russia had been targeting the Free Syrian Army through airstrikes and if Obama thrust them in there anyways, wouldn't that make it Obama's fault? I sense that tensions will only rise and a costly mistake will be made by Obama, but of course he will try to shift the blame to Putin.

I feel the best I can do as an American citizen, is email my states Federal representatives, as I will the White House, and Obama himself ! In the end, if we're against Assad then we're going to be fighting against the Russians. The main goal should be to take out ISIS and Al Qaeda then leave.

I do not advocate Assad nor do I vilify him. His regime did maintain stability for many years before external agendas sought to cause instability.

As an American I do not fear Russia as a military force, though I do respect them. In a war against American the Russians would lose, but both sides would be significantly "hurt".

American should withdraw any and all military intervention and involvement in Syria.

There are plenty of other global locations where extremist organizations are developing, training, and expanding.

American should be looking to those locations and engaging there.

Lastly, ask yourself, who profits on a global economic scale these actions?



Assad did absolutely nothing against America's interest. In the early days of the civil war, Obama threatened to bomb Assad forces because Assad had chemical weapons. Assad promptly destroyed all of his chemical stock piles so Obama would have no excuse. That was a huge mistakebecause right after that, Obama upped his demand and insists that Assad had to go.
Had Assad called Putin for help in those early days, the ISIS would ahve been wiped out before they grew this big.
Now Obama is sending our elite forces to train and advice terrorists while Russia's air power is dominating the sky in Syria. Chances are very high that our Special Forces will take casualties. It's simply unavoidable.
And what will we gain even if Assad loses power? Nothing but another lawless country like Lybia .

Qadafi destroyed all his nuclear materials and scrapped his WMD program back in 2001 and that didn't stop the Obama Administration from helping jihadists take over the country from him. I think some countries like Syria are going to start taking the hint that maybe they should develop nukes to protect themselves from the US if they keep this up.

I've had more than enough of the US attempting to take sides in other people's wars. We never get the result the politicians say we are aiming at. There are always unintended consequences. Usually if you wait long enough it becomes apparent we made matters worse. ISIS' brutal campaign in Syria and Iraq is probably the worst thing going on anywhere on the planet right now. And the people who are experiencing it think the US equipped ISIS. You know why? Because they have American made equipment! Yes, we went into Iraq, and we pulled out of Iraq, and we left a bunch of Humvees and other equipment in Iraq, because we had no will left to participate in that conflict, but we still wanted to pick a side and try to influence the outcome. Unintended consequence: ISIS took those vehicles from the Iraqis, and now every atrocity they commit appears to be sponsored by the US. As if we didn't have enough people hating us in the world.

The U.S.A. government launched an air attack on a medical clinic in Afghanistan which killed and wounded numerous medical personnel and other civilians. They also sent a menacing military operative unit to clear and confiscate evidence. Furthermore, the U.S.A. government is also suspected of the attack on a similar clinic in Syria operated by the same organization.
Moreover, the information on the missile attack in the capitol of Syria can only be thought of as speculative because the evidence should of been displayed showing proof of the launch vehicles and/or devices in question and the possible markings of the missilles remaims in photograph and/or film format.
Secondly, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the Local Coordination Committees Group and the Associate Press must be thought of as a propoganda engines attempting to hide deceptive attacks by the U.S.A. such as the medical clinics in Afgahnistan and Syria.

Anyone who thinks there will ever be a peaceful solution in the Middle East is in fairyland. Israel and Palestine started all the tension in the 20th century, we backed Israel regardless of what atrocities they committed, now the Middle East/Arabs are our enemies. Invading Iraq and Afghanistan put the nail in the coffin (pun intended) Now we are up to our neck in it FOREVER, or at least until some jihadist sets off a nuclear weapon somewhere in the world and we retaliate in kind. These people are on the level of Nazi Germany, maybe worse, and we all know what needed to be done to stop the #$%$. Seems like mission creep to me. So, we're adding more troops on top of the 4000 troops that are already there? I want zero troops in Syria and Iraq. It's a waste of taxpayer dollars to keep bombing Iraq and Syria and it's a waste of taxpayer dollars to have any troops there. Well, I suppose of they aren't drafted then the public will stay somewhat calm about the whole thing. But if there is ever a draft over there civil wars in Syria and Iraq then a lot of American citizens are gonna raise all hell.

The purpose is NOT to fight the terrorists, the purpose is to make sure the US holds some territory in Syria before their terrorist proxies are fully exterminated.

The presence of US troops inside of Syria not only violates international law - they were not invited by the Syrian government and there is no UN mandate authorizing their presence there - this constitutes an invasion and has been planned as part of a wider goal of carving out an entire "zone" or occupied area of Syria.

While the US and its supporters whine about Russia "invading" Ukraine without evidence, and "invading" Syria despite having Damascus' invitation, the US is now openly invading Syria with ground forces after violating its airspace for over a year.

The only way to stop this is for Syria and its allies to ensure any space the US seeks to fill is already filled with Syria troops, Iranians, or an international force drawn from BRICS and Eurasian states. Russia must have another power move prepared - it's not exactly like this is a surprise.

Let's review what's really going on.

Syria has been friendly with Russia. The US doesn't like that. It created mercenary groups to wage civil war in Syria and depose the leader of Syria, President Assad.

ISIL is funded and trained by the CIA. When the US military 'attacks' ISIL, it always fails to do damage and ISIL continues to grow stronger. Along with other US-funded 'rebel' groups, ISIL wages war against Assad, but its primary purpose is to give the US a pretext to bomb and invade Syria.

Thus, recently a civilian power generation facility in Syria was bombed by the US, even though it had nothing to do with ISIL. Instead, it was held by the Assad regime, and so the US bombed it and claimed that it did so because ISIL was holding it.

The Russians changed the game when, with the approval of the legitimate government of Syria, they began bombing ISIL for real. The mercenaries knew that unlike US bombing missions, the Russians were playing for real, and so they sought sanctuary. Thus the sudden, coincidental flux of 'refugees,' who are really mercenary thugs, who are overrunning EU countries because the US has pressured the EU in accepting them so that they can have sanctuary during the Russian bombing campaign.

The Russian bombing campaign is very successful and rebel groups opposed to the Assad regime are being destroyed. The US is seeing its mercenary investment in Syria come to zero. Hence, this new phase.

Now the US will send US troops to Syria as 'human shields' to protect the mercenaries. If the Russians try to bomb the mercenaries, they will risk hitting US soldiers, and the US will protest, and take that as a pretext to launch a full-scale invasion into Syria which could result in a World-War-III confrontation with Russia.

Our psychotic leaders believe that the Russians will back down instead. And so, under US protection, with the Russian bombing effort neutralized, the CIA mercenaries will defeat Assad. Or, deployments of US troops will. One way or the other, the US will get its way.

Or so its leaders think.



Those troops are not being sent to "fight ISIS". The U.S. created ISIS, has funded it, has given it arms and transport. The state department has admitted this. The defense department has admitted it. Those troops are being placed there in order to act as easy targets for the Russian forces who are now trying to wipe out ISIS, and when our troops are killed by Russian attacks (and they will be), Obama is just going to use this as an excuse to start military operations against Russia and to try to remove Assad. Syria has not requested troops from the U.S. and the U.S. has no business sending troops into that area, except to get them killed.

This sort of makes the American commandoes human shields to protect the enemies of Assad. Makes you wonder which side Obama is on. We know he hates Assad. But does he REALLY want to fight ISIS, or is he just using that as an excuse to support the factions trying to overthrow Assad?
