Federal Agency Overseeing Water and Power is Procuring Ammunition for Nonmilitary Purposes

Bureau of Reclamation to buy 52,000 rounds of ammo for Hoover Dam, Lake Mead officersJuly 13, 2015
AP - The federal agency overseeing water and power is in the market for 52,000 rounds of ammunition for its officers at Hoover Dam and the Lake Mead National Recreation Area, raising questions about weapons for nonmilitary purposes.
The Bureau of Reclamation put out a bid in June for 41,600 rounds of hollow-point ammunition and 10,400 rounds of shotgun ammunition.
The ammo is paid for by revenue from utility companies that buy electricity from Hoover Dam, but the bureau won't say how it will be used or offer details on its law enforcement plan at the popular tourist destinations.
A 2008 review of federal law enforcement indicated 21 officers patrolled Hoover Dam, the Las Vegas Sun reported (http://bit.ly/1HiEhZp ).
"We want to limit the amount of information any bad guys might have about our protection capabilities," Bureau of Reclamation spokeswoman Rose Davis told the newspaper. In addition to the bureau, which operates in Nevada out of its Boulder City office, the Department of Homeland Security and the Las Vegas police department are also called upon to handle Hoover Dam security.
The Bureau of Reclamation most recently purchased a large stock of ammo in 2013 and since 2008 has requested ammunition 19 times for use nationwide.
U.S. Rep. Mark Amodei, R-Nev., has said he will seek answers from the bureau including how many officers are using firearms and how they are using them.
The lawmaker was among a group of GOP congressmen who tried, unsuccessfully, to prohibit some federal authorities from using or buying weapons after a high-profile standoff in Nevada turned tense. In April 2014, Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy and his supporters faced off with the Bureau of Land Management after a federal judge authorized that agency to remove his cattle from public land. No shots fired although both sides were armed.

I don't trust the motives of an agency of any government that would deprive me of my constitutional rights. Mao said power comes from a barrel of a gun. That's why the liberals hate an armed population. It's really not about guns, it's about power and control over people.
Us Bible and gun huggers in flyover country have been unable to purchase 22 LR or pistol powder since Sandy Hook. Some blame it on hoarders, but given Obama's obsession with disarming the public, I'm not so sure that's the all of it.
Guns are durable goods, but ammunition is an expendable. It's reasonable to expect Obama's administration frustrated with congress' unwillingness to go along with gun bans to turn their efforts towards limiting the availability of ammunition.

The little town of Bishop, California just received a fully equipped APC, with 60 MM gun and all the bells and whistles. Why in the world would a small town south of Mammoth Lakes, California, a tourist town need a fully armed APC Riot vehicle. At it's peak tourist season there isn't 10,000 people in that town, including full time citizens

I am guessing that Washington has figured out that the general public is getting to blow out point and it better have as many government workers they have armed and ready to defend their jobs to keep the public in line.

Guess where we really, really need gun control. It isn't me and you - it's them.

The only problem I have with this is, it reduces the amount of ammo available to me. Producers can only put out so much. Then you have the military and the gov. getting first dibbs on it. Finally, you have the wholesalers buying up truck loads. The average Joe can't compete, and is left with what makes it to market.

I suspect that not only is the Government buying up ammunition for the defense of Hover Damn and Lake Mead, but to keep that ammo out of the hands of private citizens. The Government is trying to control all of the utilities, because that enables them to control us. Government Agencies are regulating our Constitutional Rights into oblivion, and the American people oblivious, willfully. So Sad !

They were stockpiling ammo long before Bundy. Another trial by media coming to a Waco near you.

It is a real simple answer is to why the Bureau of Reclamation is to buy 52,000 rounds of ammo for Hoover Dam, Lake Mead officers. If our United States Government has control over our water, then our Government has control over all of us, as water is a very precess commodity. and our government knows this, we all need water to survive. Control the water and you control its people

This cannot be for anything good. Hollow points and buckshot? These are people elimination rounds. If you are looking for training rounds you go FMJ as they are much less expensive. Hollow points are 3-4 times the price. Either they have an idiot for a buyer or they have ill intentions for the bullets. Possibly both?

ReplyDeletePoint1... unless you're the government and live off other people's money you don't use hollow points for practice. That's just silly.
point2... who's ever heard of the Bureau of Reclamation and is not wondering why they would have or need armed agents? Isn't that what LEO, security firms, and homeland security is for?
point3... is anyone else seeing a trend here with all of these various government agencies... that really have no need for armed agents... purchasing large stockpiles of ammunition? I don't want to seem like the foil hat crowd... but something is going on... they are preparing... I hope you are too.

I do believe that he "Burning Question" can be answered quite simply - O'bama's answer to the Public being able to purchase Ammo.
Since he cannot stop Us from buying Guns, it is to DRIVE UP THE COST OF AMMUNITION !!!
Too bad if You don't believe it - Ask your Local Gun Dealer.

41,600 rounds of hollow-point ammunition, eh? Hell, I think the Social Security Administration got 10 million rounds of that same ammunition banned by the Geneva Convention for use in war time back a couple of years ago -- All in all I think government purchases of ammunition for non military use stands at about 2.7 billion rounds, more than enough to fight a 100 year war with -- Which leaves the question, a war with whom?

No non-LE government agency should be permitted to employ armed security personnel. While I agree that Hoover Dam is a location where security is absolutely necessary, this task should be left to either Homeland Security or a private security firm, who's agents, in turn need, to be properly trained. Qualifying on a square range once a year does not produce properly trained security personnel.
JimmyB 16 hours ago
I used to work as a Police Officer for many years and we averaged using a couple of hundred rounds per year for training and qualification. This is almost 2,000 rounds per man being purchased. Every Federal agency and their contractors have been doing this for last three or four years. Private Citizens cannot find it for sale. What are they planning for ?
JT 16 hours ago
For 7 years of the Obama regime the public has been unable to buy 22 ammo. At one time 22 ammo was cheap and plentiful . What the heck is happing?
Jim J 14 hours ago
You DO NOT USE HOLLOW POINTS for target practice - it would rip the target apart not show how many rounds hit it.
Panama Joe 15 hours ago
Also included in the list were several Apache gunships, a squadron of A-10s, ... there are planes to put naval patrols on the Lake, but they have to hurry while there's enough water to float the gunboats.

ReplyDeleteThis looks and sounds like a perfect set up of a black market smuggling ring smuggling ammunition to people who shouldn`t be allowed to have guns or ammunition. Just like Hillary was running guns in Benghazi for the Obama administration. Funny isn`t it these people want to take our guns from us yet have no problem running guns around the world to increase their fortune and power.
don 16 hours ago
since 2008 they have requested ammunition 19 times nation wide.
I would think we need to have a complete accounting of how much has been fired and by whom, how many rounds are in stock and where.
It almost looks like they could be hoarding ammo.
Are they waiting for the zombie apocalypses.

How many BILLIONS of rounds of full metal jacket ammunition has DHS purchased?
One does not practice with FMJ rounds, they are for KILLING people.
GEORGE 14 hours ago
Anticipate a happening or very bad shots. And Hollow points ??? Jade Helm ?
The same administration which pushes for more gun control laws has armed DHS as if they were an invading army. Who will they invade?

Why do they need hollow point bullets? This government is not for the people or by the people. Arm yourselves America, this government is getting to the point of being tyrannical.
Phil 16 hours ago
That's nothing. Since 2012, the Department of Homeland Security has bought 2 billion (that's right, BILLION) rounds of ammunition, 7,000 automatic rifles, 2,700 MRAP vehicles, and "No Hesitation" targets, which show armed children, old people, and pregnant ladies as the enemy.
tompaine 17 hours ago
Spokeswoman Davis is full of hot air! When citizens have to register every gun and piece of ammo before buying, the government should have to explain in detail why it needs to buy so much ammunition. This secrecy is indicative of a closed society such as Korea or China and not a free open society. We should demand answers!

Say what you want, call me a tin hat, but it sure seems like someone's building a standing army on civilian soil. I too would like some explanation on why these agencies need weapons, let alone ammunition.
Bill 16 hours ago
OK try to put two and two together. The government / liberals want to flat out outlaw gun ownership by private citizens and arm themselves to the teeth. What do you think the reasoning for this is. Because Joe camel and the working class are the bad guys in their eyes. / you and I
BRIAN 2 hours ago
Only in America. Hollow point ammunition? The military aren't allowed hollow point, I have a feeling it's contrary to the Geneva Convention. So there is a definite intent to kill whichever civilians these rounds are intended for because hollow point causes massive trauma causing potentially non lethal wounds to be lethal.
realist 11 hours ago
i question why hollow point ammo is being purchased since this type of ammo is not even allowed to be used by the military ..... these millions of rounds of all caliber ammo purchased by DHS are to be used against us in the event of martial law being imposed on us....
Duane K 15 hours ago
Only the government should have guns or ammunition. No, the 100+ mass casualty shootings in the last two years or so are not psychological operations perpetrated upon the American public....they are REAL. Even if the historical average was 3 to 5 such events per year. We NEED gun control laws to keep guns out of the hands of the crazy citizens. Just watch the news, you will see....television programming and Hollywood will also illustrate the need to ban guns.

HA!!! why do they need Hollow Point ammo ? why cant these guys just get by with 10 round mags and semi auto weapons that are not on any of the ban lists? why do they need so much fire power? what are they afraid of?

when I was working in armed security I would fire 200 rounds a practice session twice per year. The actual range qualification test used 50 rounds every two years. And I had to keep 50 rounds of "working" ammo, which I never had to use on the job. So, I would say about 400-500 rounds per years per agent. So 10 agents would require about 4000-5000 rounds per year. However, having said that, no one uses top grade ammo like .40 caliber hollow points for practice. There is plenty of cheap target ammo. If they had said they bought 40,000 rounds of cheap training ammo and 10,000 rounds of .40 caliber HP , I would not be so concerned. But, they bought 50000 rounds of .40 HP. WTF? Are they planning for a war? Who could possibly be the enemy upon which they would use such vast quantities of ammo? Oh, yeah....never mind. Hmmmmm.

Another week, another story about this administration arming civilian agencies with ridiculous ammo purchase. For the boys and girls keeping score at home, the BHO administration has now ammo'd up the civilian non law enforcement agencies with over 10 times the amount of ammo used in the entire Iraq and Afghan wars COMBINED.

Hey folks, did anyone ever consider that the fed is stockpiling ammo because Obama is all in favor of the UN's Arms Trade Treaty? Once the ammo is banned, the only ones that will get ammo is the fed and they seem to have enough to bring the citizenry to its knees. Secretary of State John Kerry signed the Arms Trade Treaty Sept. 25, 2013 which went into effect on December 24, 2014.
